Austin Edgerton was born at Monson, Massachusetts in the year 1801, the eldest son of Dan Edgerton and his first wife, Huldah Fuller.  Austin was raised in Monson, Massachusetts.  He made his living as a shoemaker.

Austin Edgerton was married to Alma Ann Godfrey, daughter of Samuel and Patty (Gilmore) Godfrey, of New Braintree, Massachusetts.  The intention of Austin and Alma’s marriage was published at New Braintree on February 19, 1826 (see Vital Records of New Braintree).  Austin’s younger brother, Orrin Edgerton, was married at New Braintree to Maria Foster (intention published on February 26, 1826).

Austin and Alma Edgerton settled in the town of North Brookfield, where they had a family of at least five daughters:  Elizabeth N. (who died at the age of nineteen years), Alma Anna (who married John Dakin), Mary Tidd (who married John Bigelow), Margaret A. (who married Thomas C. Flanegin), and Abby Frances (who married James Irwin Wilson).  The 1830 Federal Census (see below) indicates that there may have been one other daughter, who probably died young.

At the time of this census, Austin was residing directly adjacent to the family of Luther Edgerton Jr. (1804 – 1891), a distant cousin and fellow Richard Edgerton descendant.  At present, this would appear to be merely a coincidence, as there is no evidence of any close relationship between these two Edgerton families.
