Benjamin Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on September 20, 1726, the second child and eldest son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Haskins) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on September 24th.  Benjamin was raised in Norwich and presumably resided there for the majority of his lifetime.

Benjamin Edgerton was married at Norwich, Connecticut on October 31, 1754 to Susannah Griswold, daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Durkee) Griswold of Norwich.  Susannah was born at Norwich on January 25, 1729/30.  Benjamin and Susannah had a family of six children:  three sons, Benjamin, Joseph and Giles; and three daughters, Susannah, Lucy and Sarah.  The family was entered in the Vital Records of Norwich (VRp I:321).

Benjamin Edgerton was a sea captain.  For a time circa 1760-1764, he was engaged in mercantile business at Norwich with his brother-in-law, Joseph Durkee, among others.  Benjamin was principally involved as an importer of West Indian goods.  The partnership was dissolved in January of 1764, and the following statement dated January 23, 1764 was entered in the Norwich town records:  “Messrs. Lord, Durkee and Abell… have practised and carried on trade and merchantdise in said Norwich and partnership and company in equal proportions; which partnership ended the 11th instant, and there now remains a considerable quantity of goods, wares and merchantdise on hand, and also the shop and appurtenances where the trade was carried on, and also the sloop Three Friends, of sixty tons (and also her cargo), Capt. Benjamin Edgerton, Master, now at sea, bound on a voyage to the Island of Antigua.”  (see A History of Wilkes-Barré, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Vol. I; Oscar Jewell Harvey; published by the author: Wilkes--Barré, Penn.; 1908; pg. 482).

Captain Benjamin Edgerton died at Norwich, Connecticut on August 13, 1800.  A death notice was published in the Norwich Courier on August 20, 1800.  Mrs. Susannah (Griswold) Edgerton is reputed to have died in the year 1796, presumably at Norwich Connecticut; however, to date no primary record of her death has been located.
