Bradford Edgerton was born in Dorset, Vermont on July 13, 1838, the son of Robert and Abigail (Bowen) Edgerton.  He was a farmer and engineer and resided in Dorset throughout his life.

 

Bradford was married in Danby, Vermont on September 30, 1862 to his first cousin, Anna (aka. “Annie”) Ferry, daughter of Barney and Elsie (Edgerton) Ferry of Wallingford, Vermont.  Anna was born in Wallingford on April 25, 1840.  Bradford and Anna’s marriage was recorded both in Danby (VR 1:5), and in her hometown of Wallingford (VR 1:7:5).  The latter record lists a less precise date of October 1862 and states that both bride and groom were residing in Wallingford (District 2) at the time of the marriage.

 

Bradford and Anna (Ferry) Edgerton had three children – a daughter, Mary Lillian, and two sons, Hannibal Charles and Earle Bradford.  The family resided in Dorset, Vermont. 

 

Bradford Edgerton served in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted from Dorset, Vermont on August 27, 1862, and served as a private in B Company, 14th Infantry Vermont Regiment.  His younger brother, Charles Henry, enlisted the following day and served in the same company.  Bradford Edgerton was discharged on disability December 29,  1862 (see Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion 1861-66; 1892).

 

Bradford Edgerton applied for a Civil War invalid Pension on January 10, 1864.  The application cited his service in the 14th Regiment, Vermont Infantry (Co. B).  Annie F. Edgerton, widow of Bradford Edgerton, applied for a Civil War widow’s Pension on February 29. 1880 (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #39112, Certificate #164653; and Application #262258, Certificate #191597).

Bradford Edgerton died in Dorset, Vermont on September 20, 1879 at the age of forty-one.  According to his death record (Dorset VR 2:126:23), he was an “engineer, born in Dorset” and was residing in District 6 at the time of his death.  The cause of death was listed as “heart disease”.

In the above census record, Hannibal was listed as a “conductor (R.R.)” and Earle was listed as a “night editor (Rutland Herald)”.  The household also included one boarder (Henry Williams) and one servant (Francis A. Abbott).

 

 Mrs. Anna (Ferry) Edgerton died at Bennington, Vermont on January 16, 1909.  According to her death certificate (Bennington VR 11:81), Anna was a  widow, aged 67 years, 8 months and 21 days.  The death record also states that she was born on April 25, 1840, the daughter of Barney and Elsie (Edgerton) Ferry; and that she was buried on January 19, 1909 in East Dorset, Vermont.  The cause of death was listed as “pneumonia”.  Bradford and Anna (Ferry) Edgerton are buried together at the Protestant Cemetery in East Dorset, Vermont.
