Charles Edgerton was born July 1837 at Sullivan, New York, the youngest son of Ezekiel H. and Maria (Parker) Edgerton.  He was raised in Sullivan, but spent most of his life in the town of Manchester in Ontario County, New York.  He lived in the village of Shortsville, where he made his living as a dry goods merchant.  Later in life, he removed to the city of Buffalo.

 

Charles Edgerton graduated from the Cazenovia Seminary in 1856.  The following entry is found in First Fifty Years of Cazenovia Seminary 1825 – 1875 (New York, NY: Nelson and Phillips Publishers; 1877):

 

“Edgerton, Charles, born in Sullivan, N.Y.  North Manlius, N.Y.  1856.  Married, February 4, 1863, to Amelia Barton, of North Manlius.  Merchant.  Residence, Shortsville, N.Y.

Charles and Amelia’s eldest son, George L., had died shortly before this census was taken.  His death was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census Mortality Schedule for Manchester, Ontario County, New York.  According to the listing, George was aged 1 year, born in New York and had died in April of inflammation of the bowels.

According to the above census record, Amelia was the mother of five children, four of whom were still living.  The family was residing at 540 Ashland Avenue.

 

The following obituary notice for Charles Edgerton appeared in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle on Monday, April 20, 1903:

 

“The remains of Charles Edgerton, whose death occurred in Buffalo on the 16th, were brought to Shortsville on Saturday and placed in Brookside cemetery.  Mr. Edgerton was for a number of years a merchant in Shortsville.  He sold his business to Messrs. Wise and Bidwell about fifteen years ago.  He was postmaster during the Hayes administration.  A wife and son and three daughters survive him.”

 

An identical obituary was republished in the Ontario County Chronicle on Wednesday, April 22, 1903.
