Charles A. Edgerton was born at Delhi, New York on January 25, 1822.  He was the second son of Gurden H. Edgerton and Hannah Fischer.  Charles’ full name may have been Charles Augustus Edgerton.  (His only son was named Augustus; and Charles’ daughter, Cora, also named one of her sons Augustus.)

Charles resided in Delhi, New York his entire life.  He was married at Walton, New York on Monday, October 9, 1848, to Miss Mary T. Smith, “of Walton”.  The marriage was performed by Rev. Brown.  A notice of the marriage was printed in the Delaware County Gazette on October 11, 1848.  Mary’s parentage has not been ascertained; according to her gravestone inscription, she was born in the year 1828, probably at Walton, New York.  Charles and Mary are known to have had only two children – a daughter, Cora, born in 1849; and a son, Augustus Huntington, born in 1860.  The family resided in Delhi Township, New York on the “Platner Farm”, located just a short distance outside the village.

For a number of years, Charles provided a home for his uncle, George Fischer, who apparently never married.  George was recorded in Charles’ household in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses (see below).  Upon the death of his father, Gurden, in 1860, Charles inherited property in Delhi (the aforementioned “Platner Farm”) as well as a cash legacy, under the provision that he continue to provide a home and support for his uncle.

The household of Charles A. Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Delhi, Delaware County, New York (pg. 275; dwelling #1669; family #1709; enum. September 30, 1850), as follows:

Curiously, neither of Charles and Mary’s children – Cora and Augustus, both still unmarried – were enumerated with them in this census.

Mrs. Mary (Smith) Edgerton died at Delhi, New York on Sunday, February 13, 1876.  The following obituary notice was printed in the Delaware County Gazette on February 16, 1876:

“Died…Mrs. Mary T. Smith Edgerton, wife of Charles A. Edgerton, near this village, Sun. 13th inst., of typhoid pneumonia, aged 48 years, member St. John’s Church.  Funeral at church Wed. 11 o’clock.”

Charles A. Edgerton survived his wife only one month.  He died at Delhi, New York on Monday, March 13, 1876.  The following obituary notice was printed in the Delaware County Gazette on March 15, 1876:

“Died…Charles A. Edgerton, near Delhi, Mon. March 13th, aged 54 years.  Funeral from his residence Thurs. 2 p.m.”

Charles and Mary Edgerton were buried side-by-side at Woodland Cemetery in the village of Delhi.  Both of Charles and Mary’s children – Cora and Augustus – were later buried in the same family plot, as were three grandchildren.  The family monument erected there bears the following set of inscriptions:

CHARLES A. / EDGERTON / 1822 – 1876 / MARY T. SMITH / HIS WIFE / 1828 – 1876

AUGUSTUS H. / EDGERTON / 1860 – 1931 / MINNIE E. / WANNAMACHER / HIS WIFE / 1873 – 1963

Smaller footstones (bearing identical dates) were also placed at the head of each of the graves; and individual gravestones were erected for Charles’ daughter, Cora (Edgerton) Shaw, her husband, Daniel W. Shaw, and their son, Augustus H. Shaw.
