The following obituary for Charles Bester Edgerton
Sr. was printed in the Ironton Register on December 6 (or 9), 1900
(transcript courtesy of Ms. Elaine Waiters):
“DEATH OF DR. EGERTON
Dr. Charles B. Egerton, one of the most honored residents
of Lawrence
county, died at his home near Rockwood, Friday afternoon. His fatal illness was of brief duration,
but he had been ailing for some years.
Dr. Egerton was born at Northfield, VT.,
March 6, 1825. After acquiring an
education, he came to Ironton at the age of 27 years and entered upon the
practice of medicine with the late Dr. N. K. Moxley, Sr. After several years he became a member of
the drug firm of Moxley, Barber, and Egerton, which was not a success, and
the business was given up. In 1860 Dr.
Egerton was elected Probate Judge and served three terms, after which he
engaged in the real estate business until 1876, when he moved to the farm
where he died.
Dr. Egerton was prominently identified with the public
institutions of this community and was a leading spirit in the development of
the industrial advantages of the locality.
He was a member of the first board of trustees of Woodland
cemetery and also of the first board of the Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Lawrence Lodge F. & A. M., of this
city, and had been for almost half a century.
By his death Lawrence
county loses one of its most intellectual and progressive citizens and one
whose memory will always be associated with the early scenes of local
history.
The deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn his
loss. The latter are: County Treasurer
C. B. Egerton Jr., ex-County Surveyor Jas. T. Egerton, both of Ironton;
William A. Egerton and Mrs. Elizabeth Shaw of Huntington,
W. Va.
The funeral was held at R. Mather’s Sunday at 1:30, the
services being conducted by Rev. W. H. Hampton. Miss Scofield, Miss Murdock, Mr. Carl
Moulton and Mr Ed Schfield sang. H. C.
Burr, V. Newman, F. C. Tomlinson, J. C. Snyder, Jere Davidson and E. Bixby
were the pallbearers. The remains were
interred in beautiful Woodland.”
Much of the information included here pertaining to the
immediate family and children of Charles Bester Edgerton has been provided by
Elaine Waiters, a relation of Charles’ wife, Emeline Turney. Our thanks are extended to Ms. Waiters for
sharing her research into this branch of the Edgerton family. We are also indebted to Ms. Susan
Droppleman, for providing much information on the children of Charles Bester
Edgerton (Egerton) Sr. and Emeline Turney.
Ms. Droppleman is a great-granddaughter of this couple through their
younger daughter, Elizabeth Edna Edgerton (Egerton).
