Charles Henry Edgerton was born at Dorset, Vermont on October 22, 1840, the youngest son of Robert Edgerton II and Abigail Bowen.  He was raised in Dorset and resided their for the entirety of his life.  He made his living as a marble worker, miller and engineer.

 

“Charles Edgerton, of Dorset, Vermont” enlisted on August 28, 1862 as a private in the C Company, 14th Vermont Infantry Regiment – the same regiment in which his elder brother, Bradford, also served.  He was mustered out at Brattleboro, Vermont on  July 30, 1863 (see Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion 1861-66, 1892).

 

Charles H. Edgerton was married at Dorset on September 17, 1873 to Miss Nellie E. Bull, daughter of Elisha and Mary Ann (Frink) Bull of Danby, Vermont and Cambridge, New York.  According to the marriage entry in the Dorset Vital Records (Book II, pg. 14, #7), Charles was aged 32, a miller, born at Dorset, the son of Robt and Abigail (Bowen) Edgerton; and Nellie was born at Danby, Vermont (sic), the daughter of Elisha E. and Mary Ann Bull.  Charles and Nellie did not have any children.

 

The household of Charles Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Dorset, Bennington County, Vermont (dwelling #87; family #63; enum. June 20, 1880), as follows:

Charles H. Edgerton applied for a Civil War invalid Pension on July 17, 1890.  The application was filed from Vermont, and cited Charles’ service in 14th Regiment, Vermont Infantry (Co. C).  “J. Fischer” was listed as the representing attorney.  Charles’ widow, Nellie Edgerton, later applied for a Civil War widow's Pension on May 15, 1893.  The application was filed from the state of Vermont (see National Archives Pension Applications; Application #829786, Certificate #660830, and Application #576444, Certificate #382395).

 

Charles Henry Edgerton died at Dorset, Vermont on May 1, 1893.  According to the entry in the Dorset Vital Records (Book III, pg. 23, #10), Charles was aged 52 years, 6 months, 10 days, an engineer, born at Dorset, the son of Robt & Abigail (Bowen) Edgerton.  Charles was buried at the Protestant Cemetery in East Dorset, Vermont where his gravestone was inscribed with the complete dates of his birth and death.  Charles’ widow, Nellie (Bull) Edgerton, was twice remarried – first to Isaac Walter Rush and second to Bert James Brown.  She died at Rupert, Vermont on May 31, 1947.
