Crispin Bull Edgerton was born in Wallingford, Vermont
on April 23, 1804. He was the third
son and fourth child of Robert and Anna (Bull) Edgerton and was no doubt
named for his maternal grandfather, Crispin Bull. Crispin made his living as a farmer and
blacksmith.
Crispin
grew up in Wallingford
and resided there for the majority of his life. He was married on December 25, 1832 to
Lucretia Smead Allen, daughter of Rufus and Sarah Fatbush (Warren) Allen of East Wallingford. The marriage presumably took place at Wallingford, although no
entry is found in the Vital Records there.
Lucretia was born in East Wallingford
on July 29, 1813. For details on
Lucretia’s ancestry, please see Orrin Peer Allen’s companion genealogies, Descendants of Edward Allen of Nantucket,
Mass (Massachusetts: C.B. Fiske & Co.; 1905) and Descendants
of Nicholas Cady of Watertown, Mass. (Massachusetts: C.B. Fiske
& Co.; 1910).
Crispin and Lucretia raised a large family of
eleven children – seven sons and four daughters. All but one of the children (son John
Congdon) survived to adulthood. The
family lived in Wallingford,
on West Hill very near the border with Tinmouth township. Crispin was listed as a head of household in
Wallingford
in the Federal Censuses of 1840, 1850 and 1860. At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, the
family was recorded in neighboring Tinmouth, but did not stay there
long. By the time of the 1880 Federal
Census, the family was back in Wallingford.
The household of “C. B.
Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal
Census of Wallingford, Rutland
County, Vermont
(pg. 163), with the following enumeration:
1 male “90 and under 100”
(?);
1 male “20 and under 30”
(Crispin – actually aged 36);
1 male “5 and under 10”
(son Martin);
2 males “under 5 years”
(sons Rufus and Clark); and,
1 female “20 and under 30” (wife Lucretia).
For some reason, Crispin’s eldest daughter, Sarah
(then aged about seven), was omitted from this census enumeration.
The household of Crispin Edgerton was recorded in
the 1850
Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland
County, Vermont
(pg. 328; dwelling #434; family #445; enum. Aug. 14, 1850), as follows:

Crispin and Lucretia’s second-eldest son, Rufus
Allen Edgerton, fought in the Union Army during the Civil War (H Company, 1st
Vermont Cavalry Regiment). Rufus died
“of disease” at Annapolis, Maryland
on November 6, 1862, and his body was subsequently returned to Wallingford and buried in the family plot at Green Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Lucretia A. Edgerton later applied for
a Revolutionary Pension, on behalf of her son, “Rufus A. Edgerton”. The application was dated January 2, 1880
and cited Rufus’ service in the 1st Vermont Cavalry (see National Archives Pension
Applications; Application #257766, Certificate #232929).
The household of Crispin Edgerton was recorded in
the 1870
Federal Census of Tinmouth, Rutland

Crispin Bull Edgerton died
on January 3, 1883 (presumably at Wallingford,
Vermont) and was buried at Green Hill
Cemetery in Wallingford village. His wife, Lucretia, survived him eleven
years, dying on October 30, 1894. She
was buried beside her husband at Green
Hill Cemetery. Both dates of death are provided by the
gravestone inscriptions at Green
Hill Cemetery. Lucretia’s death was also recorded in the
Wallingford Vital Records (Book III,
pg. 50, no. 29). According to the
record, she had died of “general debility” on October 30, 1894, aged 81
years, 3 months and 1day.
Most of Crispin and
Lucretia’s children resided in Wallingford
most of their lives and were noted for their longevity. Daughters Mary Jane, Ella and Betsey lived
to the ages of 72, 75 and 89, respectively, son Clark M. lived into his 80’s,
and the eldest son, Martin, attained the remarkable age of 95 years.
Orrin Peer Allen’s Descendants of Edward Allen of Nantucket, Mass (Massachusetts: C.B. Fiske & Co.; 1905; pp.
71-73) provides the following summary of the family and descendants of
Crispin Bull and Lucretia Smead (Allen) Edgerton. Similar information is found in the
author’s companion genealogy, Descendants
of Nicholas Cady of Watertown, Mass.
(Massachusetts: C.B. Fiske & Co.;
1910; pg. 127).
