Cyrus Edgerton was born circa 1789, probably in the state of Connecticut.  The majority of census records report that Cyrus was born in Connecticut; however the 1860 Federal Census of Cyrus’ household (see below) and the enumeration of Cyrus’ daughter, Sarah (Edgerton) Thompson, in the 1880 Federal Census report that he was born in New York State.  It seems probable that Cyrus was born in Connecticut and may have removed to New York State with his parents at a young age.  Numerous Connecticut families settled in New York State in the years following the Revolution.  According to the marriage certificate for Cyrus’ younger son, Leander, filed in Vigo County, Indiana in the year 1912 (Volume 32, cert. #299), Cyrus was born at “Hartford, Conn.”.

Circa 1825, Cyrus Edgerton removed west to Vigo County, Indiana, on the western side of the state along the Illinois border.  On March 17, 1825, he and William P. Dexter purchased a tract of land in  Lot 25, Sugar Creek Township from Mark Williams (see The History of Vigo County, Indiana; H. C. Bradsby, S. B. Nelson and Co., Chicago, 1891; p. 206).

Cyrus Edgerton was married at Vigo County, Indiana on November 17, 1827 to Roxana Wilson.  According to the 1850 Federal Census (see below), Roxana was born in New York State circa 1800; her parentage has not been investigated.  Cyrus and Roxana resided in Sugar Creek Township and had a family of six children:  John Dalton, born circa 1829, married Mary Lucinda Thralls; Patience, born circa 1831; Sarah Ceseptia, born November 24, 1832, married William Harrison Thompson; Margaret L., born October 1837, married first, Thomas L. Black and second, William Frye; Drusilla, born circa 1839, married James Russell; and Leander, born January 18, 1844, married first, Eliza Jane Wilkinson, second Amy J. Cotton and third, Celia Jackson.

The household of Cyrus “Edgarton” was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Vigo County, Indiana (pg. 88), with the following enumeration:

1 male 30 – 40  (Cyrus);

1 male under 5  (son John);

1 female 20 – 30  (wife Roxana); and,

1 female 10 – 15  (?)

The household of Cyrus Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Sugar Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana (pg. 437), with the following enumeration:

1 male 50 – 60  (Cyrus);

1 male 10 – 15  (son John);

1 female 30 – 40  (wife Roxana);

2 females 5 – 10  (daughters Patience and Sarah); and,

2 females under 5  (daughters Margaret and Drusilla).

The household of Cyrus “Adgident” was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Sugar Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana (pg. 210; dwelling #147; family #147; enum. November 16, 1850), as follows:

During the early-1850’s, Cyrus Edgerton removed to Wabash Township, Illinois – just west of Vigo County across the Illinois/Indiana border.  The household of Cyrus “Edgerdon” was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Wabash Township, Clark County, Illinois (dwelling #1843; family #3; enum. August 22, 1860), as follows:

Mrs. Roxana (Wilson) Edgerton had presumably died by the time of the 1870 Federal Census.  Cyrus was enumerated at that time in the household of Jehu and Eliza Farr in Wabash Township, Clark County, Illinois (dwelling #489; family #500; enum. August 5, 1870).  He was recorded as “Cyrus Edgerton, aged 82, born in Connecticut, at home, blind”.  This is the last known record of Cyrus Edgerton.
