Dan Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on January 26, 1771, the youngest son of John and Freelove (Armstrong) Edgerton.  Dan’s mother died when he was seven years old, and the family later removed north to Mansfield, in Tolland County, Connecticut.  After a few years in Mansfield, Dan together with his father and elder brother, David, removed to Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts, which lay just north over the Massachusetts/Connecticut border.

Dan Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife was Huldah Fuller, daughter of Joshua and Margaret (Richardson) Fuller of Monson, Massachusetts.  Huldah was born at Monson on May 29, 1776.  Dan and Huldah were married on September 22, 1796, presumably at Monson, Massachusetts.  They had a family of six children:  three daughters, Lorinda, Margaret and Sophronia; and three sons, Austin, Orrin and Dan Jr.  The youngest child, Dan, died in infancy.

Dan Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1800 Federal Census of Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts (pg. 266).  He was residing adjacent to his father, John Edgerton, and his household consisted of the following individuals:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Dan);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Huldah); and

3 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Lorinda, Margaret and Sophronia).

Mrs. Huldah (Fuller) Edgerton died at Monson, Massachusetts on April 21, 1804; her burial location has not been ascertained.  Dan was remarried the following year, on January 21, 1805, to Mindwell Lane, daughter of Robert and Mindwell Lane of Brookfield, Massachusetts.  Dan had eight children with his second wife: five sons, Dan Jr. (the second), Artemus, Edwin, Alfred and Almon; and three daughters, Huldah Maria, Almira Mindwell and Laura Lucretia.

At the time of the 1810 Federal Census, Dan was residing with his father, John Edgerton, in Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts (pg. 408).  John was listed as the head of household, and the enumeration of the household included Dan and his second wife, Mindwell (both aged 26 – 45) and five sons under ten years of age.  Dan’s three daughters by his first marriage were not included in the enumeration.  They were probably residing with relatives of their mother, Huldah Fuller; there were a number of Fuller households listed in the 1810 Census of Monson.

The household of Dan Edgerton was enumerated in the 1820 Federal Census of Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts (pg. 362), as follows:

1 male “over 45 years of age”  (Dan);

3 males “of 10 and under 16”  (sons Dan, Artemus and Edwin);

2 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Alfred and Almon);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (second wife Mindwell); and,

2 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Huldah and Mindwell).

Dan Edgerton later returned to his homestate and was residing in Vernon (Tolland County) at the time of his death in 1830.  Dan was still living when the 1830 Federal Census was enumerated, but he may have been ill since his son, Edwin, had taken over the family homestead and was listed as head of household on the census roll.  The death of Dan Edgerton on  June 22, 1830, “aged 56” [sic], was recorded at the Vernon Congregational Church (Book AK1, pg. 115).

Dan’s widow, Mindwell, later removed to Eastford, Connecticut, where she died on February 22, 1849.  The record of her death at Eastford (Vital Records, Book I, pg. 17), lists her as “Mindwell Edgerton” and states that she was born in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, was a resident of Eastford, and was 68 years old at the time of her death.  The cause of death was given as “dropsy”.  Mindwell Edgerton was buried in Eastford, Connecticut at the General Lyon Cemetery in the same plot were her daughter and son-in-law, Huldah and Allton Sherman, were later buried.
