Daniel Edgerton II was the eldest son of Capt. Daniel and Mary (Douglass) Edgerton.  He was born April 12, 1768 in Norwich, Connecticut and was baptized on May 15th of the same year at the First Congregational Church of Norwich.  Daniel came to Rutland County, Vermont in 1781 with his parents and settled on West Hill in Wallingford.

Daniel Edgerton was married on March 17, 1791 to Elizabeth “Betsey” Fargo, daughter of Aaron and Elizabeth (Reed) Fargo of Norwich, Connecticut.  Betsey was born in Norwich on October 22, 1766.  Daniel and Elizabeth lived in Wallingford, Vermont, where they raised a family of eight children.  Daniel was a farmer by profession.  After his father’s death, he obtained quit-claim deeds from his siblings to their shares in their father’s estate.  He lived on the family homestead on West Hill for the remainder of his life.

Daniel “Adjutant” was listed as a head of household in the 1790 Federal Census of Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 250).  Vermont did not obtain statehood until March of 1791, and thus, the Federal Census for Vermont was not enumerated until that time.  Daniel Edgerton Jr. had just recently married, and his household was enumerated with just himself and his wife, Elizabeth – that is:

1 male “over 16 years of age”  (Daniel); and,

1 female  (wife Elizabeth).

[“Adjutant” and “Adjudant” were common misspellings of the surname Edgerton in early colonial times.  It occurs quite often in the census records of the early 1800’s and was most likely a phonetic variation of the name.  Daniel’s father, Capt. Daniel Edgerton, was referred to in the old town records of Tinmouth, Vermont as “Capt. Daniel Adjutant”.]

The household of Daniel Edgerton was enumerated in the 1800 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 121), as follows:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Daniel);

3 males “under 10 years”  (sons Daniel Jr., Jonathan and Harley);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Elizabeth); and,

1 female “under 10 years”  (daughter Laura).

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 215), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Daniel);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Daniel Jr.);

2 males “of 10 and under 16”  (sons Jonathan and Harley);

3 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Heman, Alanson and Robinson);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Elizabeth);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (daughter Laura);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Abigail).

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 235), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (Daniel);

2 males “of 16 and under 26”  (sons Harley and Heman);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Robinson);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (wife Elizabeth – actually aged 43);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Abigail).

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 24), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Daniel – actually aged 62);

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (son Harley);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (son Robinson);

1 female “of 60 and under 70”  (wife Elizabeth);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (daughter-in-law Susan); and,

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (?).

Daniel Edgerton died at Wallingford, Vermont on January 12, 1835, “AE 67 years”, and was buried at West Hill Cemetery.  His wife, Elizabeth, survived him nineteen years.   She was listed in the 1850 Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, “aged 83, born Connecticut”.  At that time, she was living with her son, Harley, who was then a widower.  Elizabeth died at Wallingford on March 27, 1854, “aged 87 yrs, 5 mo”.  She was buried beside her husband at West Hill Cemetery.

Three of Daniel and Elizabeth’s sons – Daniel III, Jonathan and Heman –  moved north to Chittenden and Addison Counties (in Vermont), where they raised their families.  Many of their descendants resided in that region (in Huntington, Charlotte and Lincoln) throughout the nineteenth century.  The two elder sons, Daniel III and Jonathan Thompson, returned to Wallingford in the 1840’s and lived there for the remainder of their lives.  Both are buried, along with their parents, at West Hill Cemetery.
