Daniel Edgerton was born September 1819 in Herkimer County, New York – presumably in the town of Mannheim.  His parentage has heretofore been undetermined.  According to state and federal census records (see below), Daniel was born September 1819 in Herkimer County, New York, his father was born in Connecticut and his mother in New York.  Given this information, it is probable that Daniel was descended from the Richard Edgerton line – through one of the many branches of the family which moved from Connecticut to central New York in the early 1800’s.  Unfortunately, Daniel’s death certificate lists his father’s name only as “Edgerton”.  However, his mother’s full name was given, that is, “Polly Newman Edgerton”; and subsequent research has established that Polly’s husband was named Lewis Edgerton.   Lewis and Polly resided in the town of Mannheim, where Lewis was listed in the 1820 Federal Census as “Lewis Adjutant”.  Daniel’s was probably raised in Herkimer County, New York, since he was married there in 1842, but there is currently no further record of his parents beyond the 1820 Census.

The first accounts of Daniel Edgerton are in Herkimer County, New York.  He was married there in Salisbury on March 19, 1842 to Sophronia Johnson, daughter of Lysander and Diana (Van Steenburg) Johnson.  Sophronia was born in Salisbury on August 22, 1822.  Daniel and Sophronia are supposed to have had seven children.  Five of these are currently known:  Lora Hannah, who married Earl J. Talcott; Loami, who married first Almina (“Minnie”) Roath, and second Lois E. ----; Diana; Letti S., who married Orville Hall; and Lillian, who married David Daniels.  The other two children probably died young, as there is no mention of them in any of the census records for this family.

Daniel was a farmer.  He resided successively in Leray, Jefferson County, New York, Boonville, Oneida County, New York and finally Leyden, Lewis County, New York.  His children resided most of their lives in Oneida County and Lewis County.  Daniel’s only son, Loami, lived for a short time in Mills County, Iowa, but returned home following the early death of his first wife, Almina.

The household of Daniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Boonville, Oneida County, New York (pg. 177; dwelling #434, family #434; enum. September 10, 1850), as follows:

According to the above census record, Sophronia was the mother of seven children, four of whom were still living.  Daniel and Loami were both listed as farmers.  At the time of this census, Daniel’s eldest daughter, Lora (Edgerton) Talcott was living nearby in Leyden Township.  The household of she and her husband, Earl Talcott, was enumerated on the same page of this census roll.

Daniel Edgerton died at Leyden, New York on September 25, 1904.  A copy of his death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health (year 1904, certificate #41588).  According to the certificate, Daniel had died of “senile gangrene, aged 86 years” and was buried on September 27, 1904 at Talcottville, New York (presumably Talcottville Cemetery).  His residence was listed as Boonville, New York and his occupation as “farming”.

The following obituary notice for Mrs. Sophronia (Johnson) Edgerton was published in the Boonville Herald in July 1909 (transcription courtesy of Ms. Linda Glover):

“Aged 86 years at her home near Denley Friday.  On Friday morning at her home near Denley occurred the death of Mrs Sophronia Edgerton, aged 86 years and 11 months.  She had been in poor health for some time.  Mrs. Edgerton was the daughter of Lysander and Diana Johnson and was born in the town of Salisbury August 22, 1822.  She was married to Daniel Edgerton on March 19, 1842 and for the past forty-six years had lived in the house where she died.  She was always much attached to her home and family ties and had a kind disposition and was revered and respected by all who knew her.  The funeral services were held from her late home on Sunday afternoon.  Rev T. Jessup of Boonville officiated and interment was made in the family plot in Talcottville cemetary. She was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Earl J. Talcott and Mrs. Orville Hall of Boonville, and one sister, Abigail Johnson who resides in Utica. The sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends and neighbors is extended to the bereaved relatives.”

Thanks are extended to Ms. Linda Glover for sharing her research on the family and descendants of Daniel and Sophronia (Johnson) Edgerton.  Linda is descended through Daniel and Sophronia’s eldest daughter, Lora (Edgerton) Talcott, and is currently researching the parentage and ancestry of Daniel Edgerton.
