Edwin Edgerton was born at Monson, Massachusetts on June 8, 1808, the third son of Dan Edgerton Sr. and his second wife, Mindwell Lane.  Edwin was raised in Monson.  Circa 1825 – 1830, he removed to Connecticut with his father and settled in the town of Vernon.

By the time of the 1830 Federal Census, Edwin had apparently taken over the family homestead, as he was listed as head of household on the Vernon Census roll.  The enumeration of the household (Vernon, Tolland Co., Conn., pg. 305), was as follows:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (father Dan);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (Edwin);

2 males “of 10 and under 15”  (brothers Alfred and Almon);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (?);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (mother Mindwell);

1 female “of 15 and under 20”  (sister Huldah);

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (sister Mindwell); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (sister Laura).

Edwin Edgerton’s wife was Celia Ann Warren, daughter of Ashbel and Abigail (Hayes) Warren of East Windsor and Vernon, Connecticut.  According to later census records, Celia was born circa 1812, probably at Vernon (or possibly East Windsor).  Edwin and Celia were married at Vernon on August 5, 1830.  Henry R. Stiles’ History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor (Case, Lockwood and Brainard; Hartford, Connecticut; 1892; Volume II, pg. 776), provides the following description of Edwin and Celia’s family:

“Celia [daughter of Ashbel and Abigail (Hayes) Warren] m. (1) Edward [sic] Edgerton; res. Ver.; (2) John Benton of Tolland; res. (1874) Stafford, Conn.  Issue (by 1st marr.):

1.       John (Edgerton), m.; d.

2.       Edwin (Edgerton), d. young.

3.       Olcott (Edgerton)

4.       Talcott (Edgerton), twins.

5.       Alton (Edgerton).

6.       Almon (Edgerton).

7.       Alvin (Edgerton).”

The household of Edwin Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 129), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 and under 40”  (Edwin);

2 males “5 and under 10”  (sons John and Edwin);

3 males “under 5 years”  (sons Olcott, Talcott and Allton); and,

1 female “20 and under 30”  (wife Celia).

The household of Edwin Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut (pg. 272; dwelling #11; family #12; enum. September 20, 1840), as follows:

Edwin and Celia Edgerton of Vernon, Connecticut were divorced in February of 1857.  According to the divorce petition filed by Celia, they had been married on August 5, 1830, and their two youngest children at the time of the divorce were Alvin (aged 11) and Almon (aged 7).  The petition cited cause as intemperance and intense cruelty (see Connecticut Divorces – Superior Court Records for the Counties of New London, Tolland and Windham; Grace Louise Knox and Barbara B. Ferris (comp.); Heritage Books Inc.; Bowie, Maryland, 1987; pg. 182).

Edwin Edgerton died at Tolland, Connecticut on February 4, 1858.  According to the record of his death (Tolland VR 4:188), he was a farmer, aged 49 years, 7 months and 26 days.  The cause of death was listed as “drunkenness”.  A notice of the death of Edwin Edgerton “of Tolland” on February 4, 1858, aged 74 (sic) was printed in the Hartford Courant on February 13, 1858.  Edwin was buried in the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery in Vernon, where his gravestone inscription records an alternate date of death of January 14, 1858.

Mrs. Celia (Warren) Edgerton was remarried on November 14, 1858 at Vernon, Connecticut to John C. Benton of Tolland, Connecticut (Vernon VR 2:238).  John and Celia subsequently removed to Monson, Hampden County, Massachusetts, where the family was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census (pg. 878; dwelling #1164; family #1334; enum. July 18, 1860).  The household was enumerated as follows:
