Eugene L. Edgerton was born at Rock Stream (Yates Township), New York on July 11, 1845, the son of Andrew Edgerton Jr. and Phebe Jane Smith.  Although Eugene’s death certificate, states that he was born July 11, 1846, this is believed to be an error; all other census records (see below), clearly indicate a birthyear of 1845.

 

Eugene Edgerton was raised in Dix, New York and Wautoma, Wisconsin.  Upon his maturity, he left the family home.  After residing for a short time in Berlin, Green Lake County, Wisconsin, he removed to the state of Minnesota, settling in Spring Valley Village (Fillmore County), where he resided for the majority of his life.  At the time of the 1910 Federal Census, he was living in McLean County, North Dakota.

 

Eugene L. Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Berlin (Ward 3), Green Lake County, Wisconsin, residing in the boarding house of Silas Nichols (pg. 354; dwelling #174; family #168; enum. ---- 1870).  He was enumerated as, “Eugene Edgerton, aged 35, born in New York, hotel clerk.”

According to the above census record, Flora was the mother of three children, all of whom were still living.   Eugene’s occupation was listed as “capitalist”, Bessie was listed as a “school teacher”, and Hubert and Clyde were each listed as “salesman (groceries)”.
