Ezekiel H. Edgerton, son of Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton.
Maria Parker
Children:
Ezekiel H. Edgerton was born at Sangerfield, New
York in June 1799, the son of Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton. To date, no primary record of Ezekiel’s
birthdate has been found. The partial
birthdate listed here is derived from the age at death recorded on his
gravestone at Old Bridgeport Cemetery (see below). Very little is currently known about Ezekiel
Edgerton’s life. He was raised in
Sangerfield and removed along with several other family member to Madison
County, New York sometime circa 1835 – 1840, settling briefly in Lenox and
then in Bridgeport (Sullivan Township). Ezekiel’s wife was Maria Parker. According to the precise age recorded on
her gravestone, Maria was born November 14, 1804. The 1850 and 1860 Federal Census
enumerations state that Maria was born in New York State. Beyond this, nothing further is known of
her parentage or ancestry. Ezekiel and Maria (Parker) Edgerton had five
children: three sons, Walter N., John
and Charles; and two daughters, Mary and Harriet Maria. All five of the children survived to
adulthood and resided in Onondaga County, New York. The household of Ezekiel H. Edgerton was recorded
in the 1830
Federal Census of Sangerfield, 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Ezekiel); 2 males “of 20 and under 30” (?); 1 male “of 10 and under 15” (?); 2 males “under 5 years of age” (sons Walter and John); and, 1 female “of 20 and under 30” (wife Maria). Ezekiel H. Edgerton and two of his brothers, Guy
E. Edgerton and Isaac H. Edgerton, were listed as heads of households in the
1835 New York State Census of Sangerfield (on pages 9, 7 and 5,
respectively). The enumerations of
this census have not yet been examined. The household of Ezekiel Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Lenox, Madison County, New York (pg. 19), with the following enumeration: 1 male “40 and under 50” (Ezekiel); 2 males “10 and under 15” (sons Walter and John); 1 male “under 5 years” (son Charles); 1 female “30 and under 40” (wife Maria); and, 2 females “under 5 years” (daughters Mary and Harriet). At the time of this census, Ezekiel was residing
adjacent to Nathaniel Parker (aged “50 and under 60”), who may have been a
relative of Ezekiel’s wife, Maria Parker. Ezekiel H. Edgerton died at Bridgeport, New York
on November 4, 1846. He was buried at
the Old Bridgeport Cemetery, where his gravestone records his age as 47 years
and 5 months. Ezekiel’s mother,
Temperance, and several other family members are also buried at the Old
Bridgeport Cemetery. Following Ezekiel’s death, his eldest son, Walter,
succeeded to the family homestead in Sullivan
Township. Walter was listed as head of
household in the 1850
Federal Census of Sullivan, Madison County, New York (pg. 42; dwelling
#580; family #645; enum. August 1, 1850). The household
included Ezekiel’s widow, Maria, and the four younger children. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census, Mrs. Maria
(Parker) Edgerton was recorded in the household of her son-in-law, Charles
Peck, in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York (dwelling #1072; family #1279;
enum. July 16, 1860). She was
enumerated as “Maria Edgerton, aged 50, b. in New York, housework, $300
personal estate”. The household also
included Ezekiel and Maria’s youngest son, Charles Edgerton. Mrs. Maria (Parker) Edgerton died at Bridgeport
(Sullivan Twp.), New York on July 4, 1863.
She was buried beside her husband at the Old Bridgeport Cemetery. Her gravestone there records her age as 58
years, 7 months and 20 days. Original Source Documents: 1830 Federal Census
