Fay Edgerton was born at Bennington, Vermont on July 8, 1803, the son of Uriah and Lydia (Fay) Edgerton.  He was raised and educated in Bennington.  At the age of twenty-two, he went to study at the Rensselaer School of Natural Sciences (now the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) at Troy, New York, where he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts.  Upon graduation, he taught at the Institute for a time and then removed to Utica, New York.

 

The following entry for Fay Edgerton is excerpted from the the Biographical Record of the Officers and Graduates of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 1824 – 1886 (Henry Bradford Nason; Troy, New York: William H. Young, pub.; 1887):

 

“Fay Edgerton, A. B. (r. s.), son of Uriah and Lydia (Fay) Edgerton, was born at Bennington, Bennington county, Vt., July 9th [sic], 1803.  He prepared in the public schools of his native town, and entered the Institute in 1825, remaining one year, after which he became adjunct to the senior professor, being appointed in February, 1828.  He remained in this capacity until the fall of 1828, when he went to Utica, N. Y., as professor of chemistry and natural sciences in the Utica Gymnasium.  He attended medical lectures in Pittsfield, Mass.  At the time of his death he was engaged in delivering a course of medical lectures at Woodstock, Vt.  His connection with the Academy at Utica was retained until his death, April 18th, 1832.  As a teacher he possessed the faculty of securing not only the confidence, but also the love, of every pupil.  He was ardent in the pursuit of knowledge, and had attained rare excellence in the natural sciences.”

 

The following obituary notice for Dr. Fay Edgerton was published in the Vermont Chronicle on Friday, April 27, 1832:

 

“DEATHS... In Woodstock... Mr. Fay Edgerton of Bennington, Professor of Chemistry in the Chemical school of Medicine, 28.”

 

The following obituary notice for Dr. Fay Edgerton was printed in the American Whig (Woodstock, Vermont) on Monday, April 30, 1832:

 

“Died in this village, on Wed. last, Mr. Fay Edgerton, of Bennington, Prof. of Chemistry in the Clinical School of Medicine in this place, aged 28 years.  We understand his remains will be conveyed to Bennington previous to interment.”

 

A detailed obituary was published in the Vermont Gazette the next month, May 29, 1832.

 

Fay Edgerton was buried in the family plot at Hinsdillville Cemetery in North Bennington, Vermont.  His gravestone was inscribed with the following epitaph:
