George Martin Edgerton was
born in Wallingford, Vermont (District 9) on October 20, 1875,
the youngest son of Daniel A. and Clarinda (Wickers) Edgerton. His father died in 1879, when George was
only four years old and his mother, Clarinda, was remarried very soon
afterwards to Benjamin Augustus Patch.
Details of George’s childhood are scant, although he appears to have
remained in the Wallingford vicinity, as his
wife, Susan Angela Wyman, came from Weston, which is just southeast of Wallingford. (Wallingford's
District 9 is on the east side of town, and thus in the direction of
Weston.) George and Susan were married
in the mid 1890’s. Incidentally,
Susan was the niece of Jessie Fuller, who had married George’s elder brother,
Charles Daniel, in 1892. It seems
quite possible that George and Susan met each other through this earlier
union.
George and Susan spent the first years of their
married life in Mount Holly, Vermont
(just adjacent to Weston and Wallingford),
where George worked as a farmer and laborer.
They had two daughters there – Florence
S., born June 18, 1896, and Blanche Elizabeth, born June 10, 1898. The elder daughter, Florence,
died at just two months of age (on August 11, 1896) and was buried at Mechanicsville Cemetery
in Mount Holly.
Although there is no gravestone, cemetery records show that Lot 102 was bought by George M. Edgerton for the burial
of his child.
The household of George M. Edgerton was recorded
in the 1900
Federal Census of Vergennes, Addison
County, Vermont
(pg. 217; dwelling #76; family #105; enum. June 4, 1900), as follows:

According to the above census record, Susan was
the mother of two children, one of whom was still living.
By 1904, the family had moved to Fair Haven, Vermont on the New
York border, where George worked in the slate mills
which were the prime industry of Fair Haven at the time. His occupation there was listed as a “bed
rubber”. George’s parents had lived in
Benson (just north of Fair Haven) for a short time, and the family may have
still had connections in the area. A
third daughter, Elma Mary, was born in Fair Haven on March 31, 1904.
The household of George M. Edgerton was recorded
in the 1910
Federal Census of Fair Haven Village, Rutland County, Vermont

At the time of this enumeration, the family was
residing at 34 West Street. George’s occupation was listed as “laborer
– slate mill”, Susan was listed as a “dressmaker” and Blanche was listed as a
“stitcher”.
George and Susan lived in Fair Haven for over
twenty-five years. Both daughters were
married there in the 1920’s. Blanche
and her husband, Carl McMaster, settled in his hometown of Middlebury, Vermont
and had one child – a daughter, Anna Elizabeth Mary. Elma married Eldridge Martin Garvey of
Bridport, Addison County,
Vermont; they settled in Fair
Haven and had a family of six children.
Mrs. Susan (Wyman) Edgerton died at Castleton, Vermont
on August 28, 1928, of heart disease, which was noted as occurring for “some
years”. She was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery
in Fair Haven. Just over a year later,
on October 26, 1929, George married Mrs. Hannah Luxinda (Taft) Hurlburt in Poultney, Vermont. Hannah was born in Wells, Rutland County, Vermont,
the daughter of Austin and Sarah (Bateman) Taft. It is not known whether Hannah and George
were divorced or not, but when Hannah died in 1940 (two years prior to
George), her death
certificate listed her name as Hannah Lucinda Hurlburt, widow of Lucius
Hurlburt. The informant was Mrs. Sarah
Beebe and there is no mention of George Edgerton’s name on the certificate.
George M. Edgerton later moved to Middlebury, Vermont,
possibly to reside with his elder daughter, Blanche. He died at Middlebury on April 8, 1942,
aged 66, and was buried at Cedar
Grove Cemetery
beside his first wife, Susan. The
following funeral notice for George M. Edgerton was printed in the Rutland
Herald on April 13, 1942:
“MIDDLEBURY, April 12, – Funeral services for George
Edgerton were held at Blackmer funeral parlors Friday at 1:30 with the Rev.
J. E. Carothers, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair
Haven where the Rev. E. J. Johnson officiated at the committal service. The bearers were William Rowell, Walter
Mooney, Ulysses Draper and W. H. Flory.”
