“George S. Egerton” enlisted for service in the Union Army on August 17, 1864 at Philadelphia, Pennsyvania. He was mustered in as a first sergeant in the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Co. C. He was promoted to full sergeant on November 3, 1864, to full first sergeant on March 1, 1865 and full second lieutenant on August 8, 1865. He was mustered out at Manchester, Virginia on August 13, 1865. Mrs. “Hannah A. Egerton, widow of George S. Egerton” applied for a widow’s pension in 1883 (National Archives Pension Applications; Application #356235, Certificate #374313). The household of George S. Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Jersey City (Ward 3), Hudson County, New Jersey (pg. 233; dwelling #738; family #1262; enum. July 30, 1870), as follows:
The two elder children listed here were actually George’s step-children, Mary and Thomas Kevil. George and Hannah’s eldest daughter, Anna L., was residing in Brooklyn at this time, in the household of her grandmother, Hannah (Converse) Edgerton. At the time of this enumeration, the family was residing at 20 Cumberland Street. George was residing at this time in Brooklyn in the household of his mother, Hannah (Converse) Edgerton. George S. Edgerton was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Soldiers at Bath, New York on February 13, 1883 suffering from rheumatism, and died shortly afterwards – on March 21, 1883. The following obituary notice was published in The New York Herald on Friday, March 23, 1883: “EGERTON. – Suddenly, on Wednesday, March 21, GEO. S., son of the late Oliver and Hannah Egerton. Notice of funeral hereafter.” At the time

of her son-in-law, James W. Long in Norfolk City, Norfolk County, Virginia
(dwelling #214; family #242; enum. June 8, 1900), as follows:
