George W. Edgerton was born at Cabot, Vermont
circa 1825, the son of John and Olive Edgerton. He was raised in Cabot and resided there
for much of his life, with the exception of a few years in New Hampshire.
George W. Edgerton was probably the “George
Edgerton, laborer, aged 25, b. in Vermont”,
who was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census
of Manchester, Hillsborough County,
New Hampshire, residing in the
household of Phebe Cowley (pg. 110; dwelling #513; family #542; enum. August
13, 1850). George’s uncle, Asa
Edgerton, was also recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Manchester.
George W. Edgerton was married (probably circa
1855) to Mahala Mary Richardson, daughter of John F. and Mary (Barry)
Richardson of Corinth, Vermont. George
and Olive had two children: a
daughter, Olive L., born in Hill, New Hampshire
on May 31, 1857; and a son, John Calhoun, born in Cabot, Vermont
on April 16, 1869. The entry of the
former’s birth in Hill, New Hampshire Vital Records lists her as the daughter
of “G.W. and Mahala Mary Egerton”.
George Edgerton apparently died sometime shortly
before the 1860 Federal Census. His
wife and two children were recorded at that time in the household of his
widowed mother, Olive Edgerton, in Cabot, Washington County, Vermont (pg. 9; dwelling #2231; family
#2364; enum. August 27, 1860).
The household of Mrs. “M. M.” Edgerton was
recorded in the 1870
Federal Census of Cabot, Washington
County, Vermont
(pg. 53; dwelling #152; family #169; enum. June 10, 1870), as follows:

This is currently the last known record of Mrs.
Mahala (Richardson)
Edgerton. The two children are later
found on the west coast – Olive was enumerated in the 1900 and 1910 Federal
Censuses of Santa Ana, Orange County, California, and John settled in Seattle, Washington,
where he was married and had three children.
