George Edgerton, son of Stephen P. and Anne (Cox) Edgerton.
George
Edgerton was born circa 1839 at Oneida County, New York, the youngest child
of Stephen P. and Anne (Cox) Edgerton.
Very little is currently known about George Edgerton. He was raised principally in Dix, New York,
where his mother settled shortly after the death of his father. George was recorded in his mother’s
household in the 1855 New York State Census of Dix, Schuyler County (dwelling
#56; family #58; enum. June 11, 1855).
He was enumerated at that time as “George Edgerton, son, aged 16, born
in Oneida Co., merchant”. Circa
1859, George Edgerton left home and removed to Doniphan County, Kansas, where
his elder brother, Vine E., had previously settled. George was listed as a head of household in the 1859
Kansas Territorial Census of Wolf Creek, Doniphan County, Kansas (pg. 6),
residing adjacent to Vine. His name
was recorded on the census roll as “Geo. Edgerton” and the enumeration of his household
included one adult. His “date of
settlement” was given as February 1, 1859. This is the last known record of George
Edgerton. He is not found in any
further Kansas (or nearby) census records.
He had evidently predeceased his mother, Anne (Cox) Edgerton, whose
obituary in 1882 lists her only surviving child as “Edmund Edgerton” – that
is, Emmet Edgerton, her eldest son. Original Source Documents: 1859
