Gurdon Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on July 3, 1771, the third son and next-to-youngest child of Elisha and Elizabeth (Lord) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on September 1st of the same year.

In 1795, Gurdon inherited lands from the estate of his father, Elisha, upon which he presumably settled.  In the 1790 Federal Census, Gurdon (then aged 19) was included in the household of his elder brother, Simon, who had taken over the family homestead.  However, Gurdon was not listed as a head of household anywhere in New London County in the Federal Census of 1800.  It is probable that he was out of state at this time – possibly in Montrose, Pennsylvania where he was married in 1803.

The marriage of Gurdon Edgerton and Laura Hewet on May 26, 1803 was recorded in the Norwich Vital Records (VRp II:619), with the note that the marriage had taken place in Montrose, Pennsylvania.  Laura’s parentage has not yet been investigated, but from later records it is estimated that she was born circa 1780, probably at Montrose, Pennsylvania.

Gurdon and Laura returned to Norwich shortly after their marriage and resided there for the remainder of their lives.  Two sons were recorded to them in Norwich – George Hosmer and Henry Hewet (VRp II:619).  Gurdon and Laura also had three children who died in infancy, as evidenced by church and cemetery records.  The registers of the First Congregational Church of Norwich contain two death entries:  “Gurdon Edgerton, his child died July 8, 1809, aged 0 years” (ChR 8:67), and later, “Gurdon Edgerton, his child died December 10, 1812, aged 0 years” (ChR 8:70).  The family plot at the Old Norwich Town Cemetery contains gravestones for these two, as well as for a third infant who died in September 1804.

The household of Gurdon Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 197), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Gurdon);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son George); and,

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Laura).

The household of Gurdon Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 627), with the following enumeration,

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (Gurdon);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son George);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Henry); and,

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Laura).

The household of Gurdon Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 122), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Gurdon);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (son George);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (?);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (son Henry); and,

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Laura).

The household of Gurdon Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Norwich Town, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 192), with the following enumeration:

1 male “60 and under 70”  (Gurdon); and,

1 female “50 and under 60”  (wife Laura).

Mrs. Laura (Hewet) Edgerton died at Norwich, Connecticut on November 7, 1843.  Gurdon Edgerton survived his wife six years.  He died at Norwich on March 15, 1849.  According to the record of his death (Norwich VR, Book 7½, pg. 155), he was a wagonmaker, born in Norwich, aged 77 years and had died of “old age”.

Gurdon and Laura Edgerton were buried in the same plot at the Old Norwich Town Cemetery.  A joint tombstone for them bears fthe following inscription:
