Guy Earl Edgerton I was born in Norwich, Connecticut
on March 15, 1793, the son of Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton. When Guy was very young, his parents
removed from Connecticut and settled in the town of Sangerfield,
in Oneida County, New York.
Guy was raised in Sangerfield and resided there for the whole of his
adult life. He made his living
variously as a farmer, blacksmith and wagon maker.
Guy was the only one of his siblings to remain in
Sangerfield. Shortly after his
father’s death in 1823, most of the family removed to Bridgeport
(Sullivan Township), in neighboring Madison
County, New York.
Guy Earl Edgerton was married on March 1, 1824 at Sangerfield, New
York to Miss Esther Cooley King, the daughter of
Thomas and Lucy (Hyde) King, who were also among the early settlers of
Sangerfield. Esther was born in
Sangerfield on March 10, 1798. Guy and
Esther had a family of eight children:
two sons, Guy Earl Jr. and John Hartwell; and six daughters, Esther
Amanda, Eliza Amelia, Emeline Adelia, Emily Cordelia, Edna Ann and Caroline
Maria. Two of the daughters – Emeline
and Caroline – died young and were buried at the Old Sangerfield
Cemetery.
The household of Guy E. Edgerton was recorded in
the 1830 Federal
Census of Sangerfield, Oneida County, New York (pg. 178), with the
following enumeration:
1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Guy);
1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Esther);
1 female “of 5 and under 10” (daughter Esther); and,
2 females “under 5 years of age” (daughters Eliza and Emeline).

Mrs. Esther (King) Edgerton died at Sangerfield, New
York on January 15, 1867, aged 68 years. A notice of her death was published in the Waterville Times on January 17,
1867. Esther was buried in the family
plot at Old Sangerfield Cemetery.
Guy Earl Edgerton died at Sangerfield, New York
on April 23, 1871, aged 78 years. He
was buried at the Old
Sangerfield Cemetery,
where his father, wife, and two daughters were previously interred. He left a Last Will and Testament, dated April 12, 1870, which was
proved at Clinton, New York on May 23, 1871 before Joseph S.
Avery, Surrogate. The will itself was
brief. His wife having predeceased
him, Guy only left instructions that his estate was to be divided equally
among his children, “Esther Amanda, Elizabeth Amelia, Emily Cordelia, Edna
Ann and John H. and their heirs share and share alike.” Curiously, the eldest son, Guy Earl Jr.,
was not mentioned among the heirs. Guy
Jr. had already moved west, and it is presumed that he had received his share
of the estate in some form prior to his father’s death.
