Guy Earl Edgerton II was
born at Sangerfield, New York on May 25, 1832, the fourth child
and eldest son of Guy Earl Edgerton Sr. and Esther Cooley King. Guy was raised in Sangerfield, but settled
in Houghton County, Michigan sometime in the mid-1850’s. Guy appears to have gone principally by his
middle name. He is almost uniformly
referred to in census and vital records as either “Earl Edgerton” or “Earle
Edgerton”. He made his living
variously as a warehouse keeper, lighthouse keeper, butcher, trader and
farmer.
Guy Earl Edgerton was
married at Houghton County, Michigan on December 9, 1857 to Mary Louise
Crebassa, daughter of Peter and Nancy (Roussain) Crebassa. Mary was born October 19, 1837, probably at
L’Anse Township, Michigan, as reported in her eldest son’s death record. Her parents were among the early settlers
of L’Anse Township, Michigan. Mary Crebassa was part native American –
Chippewa and Ojibwe tribes. Most of
her children and grandchildren were enumerated in a number of the United
States Indian and Census Schedules of the early twentieth century.
Guy Earl and Mary Edgerton
lived in the town of L’Anse, formerly part of Houghton County,
now part of Baraga County, in the upper peninsula of the state of Michigan. If the 1900 Federal Census is to be
believed, Guy and Mary had a total of fourteen children. Currently, thirteen children have been
identified. A number of their children
died young. We are very grateful to
Ms. Carol Colen for providing information on the family of Guy Earl and Mary
Louise (Crebassa) Edgerton. Ms. Colen
is descended through Guy and Mary’s daughter, Alice Hannah Edgerton, who
married Henry Crocker and resided in Manitowoc,
Wisconsin.
Guy Earl Edgerton received a
number of land patents in upstate Michigan between 1860 and 1865 –
principally in Houghton and Baraga Counties.
The Bureau of Land Management
holds records of the following patents issued from the Marquette Land Office:

The following item is found in the November 8, 1878
issue of the Portage Lake Mining
Gazette (Houghton, Michigan):
“L’ANSE NEWS – Monday night a quantity of hay, potatoes
and other produce, belonging to Earl Edgerton fell off a scow on the way from
Portage Entry to L’Anse, Baraga County. The supplies were mainly for the use
of the family for this coming winter and the loss is felt rather keenly.”

According to the above census
record, Mary was the mother of fourteen children, five of whom were still
living. Guy’s occupation was listed as
“capitalist”, and the two O’Donnell children (actually Guy’s grandsons – not
sons, as recorded) were listed as “at school”. The family was residing at 214 Park
[Street].
It is probable that Guy was actually away at the
time the above census was enumerated; this would account for the errors in
the birthplaces of his parents.
Indeed, on June 9, 1900, he was enumerated a second time, as a head of
household (living alone) in Torch Lake Township, Houghton County, Michigan
(pg. 357; dwelling #62; family #68), residing adjacent to his son, Columbus
Edgerton. He was enumerated as
follows:
