Harriet Edgerton, daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Murray) Edgerton.
Harriet Edgerton was born circa 1807, the third
daughter of Andrew and Catharine (Murray) Edgerton. She was presumably born at Palantine,
Montgomery County, New York, where her parents resided at the time. During her childhood, her parents removed
to Reading, Schuyler County, New York, and from there to Rock Stream (Starkey
Township), in neighoring Yates County, New York. Harriet resided the majority of her adult
life in Rock Stream. She was never
married. Harriet was apparently quite
religious, as her will included a number of bequests to various religious
institutions. The household of Harriet was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census
of Starkey,
Harriet Edgerton was enumerated as a head of
household in the 1880 Federal Census
of Rock Stream (Starkey Townhip), Yates County, New York (pg. 513; dwelling #82;
family #97; enum. June 3, 1880). She
was enumerated as “Harriet Edgerton, aged 72, single, keeping house, born in
New York, father born in Connecticut and mother born in Vermont. Harriet’s nephew, George I. Edgerton, was
recorded with his family in the same dwelling (family #98). Harriet Edgerton died on November 29, 1889 and was buried at the Rock Stream Cemetery, where her parents and numerous other close relatives were also buried. Harriet left a Last Will and Testament, dated August 29, 1883, which was proved at Milo, New York on November 14, 1892, before Hanford Struble, Surrogate. In the will, Harriet mentioned a number of her nephews, as well as the widows of her two brothers, James and Andrew. Willam S. Sharp of Rock Stream was named as executor, and the witnesses were S. L. Wilkins of Dundee, New York and Allitta E. Sharp of Rock Stream. Original Source Documents: 1870 Federal Census –
