Harry Edgerton was born at Simsbury, Connecticut in the year 1801, the son of John Edgerton and his second wife, Wealthy Graham.  During Harry’s childhood, his parents removed from Connecticut and settled in Madison County, New York – in the central part of the state.  Harry was a farmer.  For most of his adult life, he resided in the town of Nelson, in Madison County, New York.  He was listed as a head of household in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses of Nelson, New York.

Harry Edgerton was married – probably circa 1825/26 – to Eunice Graham.  Eunice’s parentage has not been established.  According to state and federal census records, she was born in Columbia County, New York circa 1803 and both her parents were born in Connecticut.  From the 1855 New York State Census of Nelson, New York (see below) it is known that Eunice had an elder brother, Simeon Graham, born circa 1797.  Eunice’s gravestone inscription (see below) provides a specific birthyear of 1803.

Harry and Eunice (Graham) Edgerton had two children – a son, Henry Graham, and a daughter, Sevilla.

The household of Harry Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Nelson, Madison County, New York (pg. 380), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (Harry);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Eunice); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (daughter Sevilla).

The household of Harry Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Nelson, Madison County, New York (pg. 42), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 and under 40”  (Harry);

1 male “under 5 years”  (son Henry);

1 female “30 and under 40”  (wife Eunice); and,

1 female “10 and under 15”  (daughter Sevilla).

The household of Harry Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Nelson, Madison County, New York (pg. 302; dwelling #67; family #67; enum. August 16, 1850), as follows:

The household of Harry Edgerton was again recorded in the 1855 New York State Census (Nelson, Madison County; dwelling #21; family #22; enum. June 18, 1855).  The family was living in a “frame” house, valued at $200.  The enumeration was as follows:

Harry and Eunice’s son, Henry G. Edgerton, was also residing in Nelson at this time.  He was listed as a head of household in the 1860 Federal Census of Nelson, along with his wife, Orlinda, and a one-year-old son, Edwin.

By the year 1870, Harry and his wife had left New York State and were living in Conneault Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio – in the far northwest corner of that state.  They were recorded there in the 1870 Federal Census (pg. 97; dwelling #94; family #102; enum. August 3, 1870), as follows:

Harry Edgerton died at Conneaut Township, Ohio on February 11, 1878.  His death was registered in the Ashtabula County Probate Court Record of Deaths (Book 1, pg. 144).  According to the entry, Harry was a farmer aged 71 years [sic], married, born in Connecticut.

Mrs. Eunice (Graham) Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census residing in the household of her daughter and son-in-law, Sevilla and Payne Bailey in Conneault Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio (pg. 367).  She was enumerated as “Eunice Edgerton, mother-in-law, aged 77, widow, born in New York, both parents born in Connecticut”.

Mrs. Eunice (Graham) Edgerton died at Conneuat Township, Ohio on December 28, 1896.  Her death was registered in the Ashtabula County Probate Court Record of Deaths (Book 3, pg. 57) under the name “Eunice G. Egerton”.  According to the entry, Eunice was a widow, aged 93 years, born in New York.

Harry and Eunice Edgerton were buried at the Furnace Road Cemetery (aka “East Conneaut Cemetery”) in Conneaut Township, Ohio.  A joint gravestone erected on the burial plot bears the following inscription:

Harry and Eunice’s eldest daughter, Sevilla, and her husband, Payne Bailey, were also buried in the same plot at the Furnace Road Cemetery.

Little has been previously reported about the descendants of Harry and Eunice (Graham) Edgerton.  Their daughter, Sevilla had only one child – a daughter, Emma Jane, who married John B. Tyler and raised a family in Conneaut, Ohio.  The only son, Henry Graham Edgerton, removed to Brown County, Kansas, where he died in the year 1905; he was married twice and had two sons, Edwin Anson and Eaton Henry, and one daughter, Eunice Idell.
