Isaac Edgerton was the eldest son of Philip and Mary (Hall) Edgerton.  He was born in Wallingford, Vermont on December 5, 1797.  Isaac’s birth was recorded in the Miscellaneous Town Records of Wallingford (Book I, page 125), as “Isaac son of Philip and Polly Edgerton”.  Curiously, Isaac’s birth was the only one of his siblings (or cousins) to be entered in the early vital records (pre-1857) at Wallingford.

Isaac was raised in Wallingford.  He was the only one of his siblings to remain in Wallingford, his father and brothers having removed circa 1825 to Chautauqua County, New York, and later to Thompson, Geauga County, Ohio.  A younger brother, Philip Edgerton Jr., later returned to Rutland County and resided in the town of Clarendon, just to the north of Wallingford.

Isaac Edgerton was married first on February 14, 1825 to his first cousin, Abigail R. Edgerton, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Fargo) Edgerton.  Abigail was born in Wallingford on September 15, 1805.  Isaac and Abigail had four children of whom records have been found:   Eli P., Laura, Daniel, and Abigail R..  Two of the children (Laura and Daniel) died in infancy and were buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Wallingford village.  The only surviving son, Eli P., resided for a time in Wallingford and later removed to Jessamine County, Kentucky, where he was married to Amanda T. Cogar; he died in 1898.  The youngest daughter, Abigail R., was married to Elhanan Winchester Hart on May 16, 1858 (Wallingford VR I:3:19).

The household of Isaac Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 30), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (Isaac);

1 male “under 5 years of age”  (son Eli);

1 female “of 30 and under 40”  (?);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (wife Abigail);

2 females “of 5 and under 10”  (?); and,

3 females “under 10 years of age”  (?).

Mrs. Abigail R. (Edgerton) Edgerton died at Wallingford, Vermont on October 20, 1839, “aged 34 years”.  She was buried next to her two infant children in the family plot at Green Hill Cemetery in Wallingford village.  It seems likely that Abigail died from complications of childbirth, given the recent birth of her daughter, Abigail, three days prior.  The following obituary notice was printed in the Vermont Chronicle on October 30, 1839:

“DEATHS…In Wallingford…Oct. 20, Mrs. Abigal R., wife of Mr. Isaac Edgerton, aged 34.  For several years she had been an exemplary member of the Congregational Church.  Her piety was not disputed, nor an eternity of happiness doubted, as her reward through faith; – as she lived, so she died in a cordial attachment to the doctrines of grace.”

The household of Isaac Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 155), with the following enumeration:

1 male “40 and under 50”  (Isaac);

1 male “10 and under 15”  (son Eli); and,

1 female “under 5 years”  (daughter Abigail).

Isaac Edgerton’s second wife was Cynthia E. York, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Kinney) York of East Wallingford.  Cynthia was born in East Wallingford on December 10, 1810.  A record of Isaac and Cynthia’s marriage was entered in the Miscellaneous Town Records of Wallingford (Book II, page 81), but only the year was given – that is, “1840”.  The following marriage notice was printed in the Vermont Chronicle on January 20, 1841:

“MARRIAGES…In Wallingford, Dec. 31, 1840, by Rev. Stephen Martindale, Jr., Mr. Isaac Edgerton to Miss Cynthia E. York.”

A notice of the marriage of Isaac Edgerton and “Miss Cynthia York” was also published in the Rutland Herald on February 16, 1841, but without listing the date of marriage.

The household of Isaac Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 329; dwelling #458; family #469; enum. August 14, 1850), as follows:

At the time of this census enumeration, the family was living in East Wallingford (District 14).

Mrs. Cynthia E. (York) Edgerton died in East Wallingford, Vermont on January 11, 1858, “aged 47 years”.  She was buried at Sugar Grove Cemetery, in East Wallingford, where her parents were also buried.  Cynthia’s death was recorded in the Wallingford Vital Records (Book I, pg. 41, no. 8), listing her age as “47 years, 1 month, 2 days”, and giving the cause of death as “consumption”.

Isaac Edgerton’s third wife was Lucy Foster, daughter of Abel and Mary Foster of Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.  Isaac and Lucy were reportedly married in Wallingford, Vermont on January 13, 1863, although no record of the marriage is found in the Wallingford vital records.

Isaac and Lucy Edgerton were recorded together in the 1870 Federal Census, residing in East Wallingford (District 14), Rutland County, Vermont (pg. 769; dwelling #53; family #62; enum. June 25, 1870).  They were enumerated as follows:

Isaac Edgerton

72

b. VT

Lucy

b. MA

The residence of “I. Edgarton” was clearly marked on the 1869 F.W. Beers’ Rutland County Atlas Map of Wallingford in District #14, in the southern portion of East Wallingford, on the corner next to the home of “O. Wilder” and adjacent to the old schoolhouse.

Mrs. Lucy (Foster) Edgerton died in East Wallingford, Vermont on December 16, 1877 and was buried at the Packer Cemetery in neighboring Mount Holly, Vermont.  Her gravestone there records her as “Lucy F. Edgerton, died December 16, 1877 ae 83 years and 6 months”.  Lucy’s death was also recorded in the Wallingford Vital Records (Volume II, pg. 60, no. 26), giving the date as Dec. 22, 1877, “ae. 83 years, 6 months, and 1 day”.  The cause of death was recorded as “catash”.

Following the death of his third wife, Isaac went to live with his son, Eli P. Edgerton, in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.  He was recorded in Eli’s household in the 1880 Federal Census of Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky (pg. 72; dwelling #198; family #198; enum. June 16-17, 1880), as “Isaac Edgerton, father, aged 82, retired farmer, born in Vermont, both parents born in Vermont.”  The census enumeration also records that Isaac was deaf at this time.

No record has been found of the death of Isaac Edgerton.
