Isaac Huntington Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on November 1, 1788, the eldest son of Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton.  He was probably named after Isaac Huntington, the husband of Stephen Edgerton’s aunt, Lucy (Edgerton) Huntington.  No direct record has been found of Isaac’s birth; the date listed here is derived from the specific age at death listed on his tombstone at Old Bridgeport Cemetery (see below).  The same date of birth (November 1, 1788) is also engraved on the family monument which was later erected at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.  The latter inscription also states that Isaac was born in Bennington, Vermont, but this has not been corroborated by any other known evidence.

Isaac was raised principally in Norwich, Connecticut, where his father was born and where the family was enumerated in the first Federal Census of 1790.  About the turn of the century, Isaac’s father, Stephen, removed with his family to the town of Sangerfield, in central New York State (Oneida County).

Isaac H. Edgerton served in the War of 1812 as a private in the 140th Regiment of the New York Militia under Capt. Smith (see War of 1812 Muster Rolls, box 64, extract #602).  Isaac’s younger brother, Vine Bailey Edgerton, also served in the same regiment.

Isaac Huntington Edgerton was married at Sangerfield, New York on January 14, 1819 to Miss Louisa Newberry, the daughter of Amasa and Ruth (Warner) Newberry of East Windsor, Connecticut.  Louisa was born at East Windsor on March 22, 1786.  Isaac and Louisa had three children:  two daughters, Fanny Louisa and Ruth Warner; and one son, Oliver Newberry.  The children were presumably born at Sangerfield, where Isaac was listed as a head of household in the Federal Censuses of 1820 and 1830.  The birthdates listed here are provided by Henry R. Stiles’ History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor (Case, Lockwood and Brainard; Hartford, Connecticut; 1892; Volume II, p. 522).

The household of Isaac H. Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Sangerfield, Oneida County, New York (pg. 305), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Isaac);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Louisa); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Fanny).

The household of Isaac H. Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Sangerfield, Oneida County, New York (pg. 173), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (Isaac);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son Oliver);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Louisa);

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (?);

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Fanny); and,

1 female “of 5 and under 10”  (daughter Ruth).

Isaac H. Edgerton and two of his brothers, Guy E. Edgerton and Ezekiel H. Edgerton, were listed as heads of households in the 1835 New York State Census of Sangerfield (on pages 5, 7 and 9, respectively).  The enumerations of this census have not yet been examined.

Circa 1835 – 1840, Isaac removed, along with his mother and two younger brothers, to Bridgeport (Sullivan Township), in neighboring Madison County, New York.  Isaac was listed as a head of household there in the 1840 Federal Census.

The household of “I. H. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Sullivan Township, Madison County, New York (pg. 63), with the following enumeration:

1 male “50 and under 60”  (Isaac);

1 male “15 and under 20”  (son Oliver);

1 female “50 and under 60”  (wife Louisa); and,

2 females “15 and under 20”  (daughters Fanny and Ruth).

Isaac Huntington Edgerton died at Bridgeport, New York on March 3, 1842.  The following notice of his death was printed in the Madison Observer on March 15, 1842:

“DIED… At Bridgeport, of consumption, Isaac H. Edgerton, in his 54th yr.”

The Chittenango Herald published a similar death notice on March 9, 1842.

Isaac H. Edgerton was buried at the Old Bridgeport Cemetery, where his gravestone lists his age as 53 years, 4 months, and 2 days.  Isaac’s mother, Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton, and several other family members were also buried at the Old Bridgeport Cemetery.

After Isaac’s death, his widow, Louisa, removed with her three children to Detroit, Michigan.  She and her two elder children and a grandson were recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Detroit (27th District), Wayne County, Michigan (pg. 12; dwelling #114; family #131; enum. July 19, 1850), residing in the household of her younger brother, Oliver Newberry.  The household was enumerated as follows:

At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, Mrs. Louisa (Newberry) Edgerton was recorded in the household of her son, Oliver N. Edgerton, residing in Detroit (Ward 1), Wayne County, Michigan (pg. 27; dwelling #355; family #420; enum. June 1870).  She was enumerated as “Louise Edgerton, aged 85, born in Connecticut, $200 personal estate”.  Louisa’s elder daughter, Fanny Louisa Edgerton (unmarried), was also residing with the family at this time.

Mrs. Louisa (Newberry) Edgerton died at Detroit (Ward 1) on December 19, 1872.  According to the record of her death (Wayne Co., MI Vital Records, Deaths, pg. 212, no. 3), Louisa was aged 86 years, 9 months and 3 days [sic], widowed, born in East Windsor, Connecticut.  The cause of death was listed as “pneumonia” and her parents were given as “Amasa S. Newberry” and “Ruth W. Newberry”.  Louisa was buried in the Edgerton family plot at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.  The elder daughter, Fanny L. Edgerton, was the last survivng member of the family.  She left arragements in her estate for a family monument to be erected in the family plot.  The white obelisk monument which still stands on the site bears epitaphs for Isaac and Louisa Edgerton, as well as their three children and two infant grandchildren, Edgerton C. Douglass and Franklin Edgerton.
