Isaac Locy Edgerton was born
at Smithville, New York on October 5, 1840, the elder son
of James Selleck and Lucy Ann (Ives) Edgerton. He was raised in Smithville and made his
living as a farmer.
Isaac L. Edgerton was
married on February 27, 1867 at Oxford,
New York to Clara Hortense
Tyler, the daughter of Charles and Mercy Ann (Bixby) Tyler. A notice of the marriage was published in
the Chenango American on March 7, 1867. According to the announcement, both Isaac
and Clara were “of Smithville” at the time of their marriage. Clara was born in McDonough, New York
on November 22, 1850.
Isaac and Clara Edgerton had
a family of four children: two sons,
Albert Henry and Adelbert Charles, and two daughters, Lena Ann and Lillian
Celestia. The two sons were born in
Smithville and the two daughters in Greene, were the family settled circa
1880. The birthdates of the four
children listed here are provided by the family record in the White Family
Bible, passed down through the descendants of Isaac’s elder daughter, Lena
Ann (Edgerton) White. The family
record also lists the birthdates and deathdates for Isaac L. Edgerton and
Clara Hortense Tyler. The birth of the
youngest daughter, Lillian, was also recorded in the Vital Records at Greene, New
York (“Births, Deaths & Marriages 1883 – 1906”,
pg. 9, #306).
The household of Isaac Edgerton was recorded in the 1870 Federal Census
of Smithville,
Chenango County, New York (pg. 501; dwelling #218; family
#232; enum. September 11, 1870), as follows:

The identity of the youngest
child listed here (“Mary”) is not known.
She may have been an elder daughter of Isaac and Clara, however she was
not listed in the family’s bible record, as each of the other four children
were.
The household of Isaac
Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census
of Greene, Chenango County,
New York (pg. 86; dwelling
#115; family #123; enum. June 7, 1880), as follows:

The “son”, Alfred (aka “Alford”),
included in the foregoeing two enumerations was actually Isaac’s nephew,
Alfred M. Hubbard – son of Isaac’s younger sister, Alice A. (Edgerton)
Hubbard, who died soon after Alfred’s birth.
Alfred was apparently raised in the home of his uncle, although it
does not appear that he was legally adopted.
Isaac L. Edgerton died at Greene, New
York on May 24, 1897. According to the record of his death
(Greene VR, “Births, Deaths & Marriages 1883 – 1906”, pg. 22 #739), he
was a farmer, married, aged 56 years, 7 months, and had been a resident of
Greene for 15 years. His parent were
listed as James C. [sic] Edgerton (b. NY) and Lucy Ann Edgerton (b. NY). The cause of death was recorded as
“pulmonary consumption”. Isaac was
buried at the Sylvan Lawn Cemetery
in the village
of Greene. His gravestone monument there was inscribed
with the complete dates of his birth and death.
Isaac Edgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated
at Greene, New York on August 29, 1895, in which in
mentioned his “beloved wife Clara H. Edgerton”, and four children, “Albert
Edgerton, Adelbert C. Edgerton, Lena A. Edgerton and Lillian Edgerton”. Palmer A. Curtis was named as executor,
however in a codicil to will, dated November 17, 1896, Isaac withdrew that
appointed and named his brother-in-law, William H. Daly, to be executor. The will was proved at Chenango County
Surrogate Court in Norwich,
New York on July 12, 1897.
Isaac’s widow, Clara, was
remarried on June 30, 1897 at Greene,
New York to George E.
Wells. According to the marriage
record (Greene VR, “Births, Deaths & Marriages 1883 – 1906”, pg. 12,
#407), Clara was aged 48, born in McDonough, New York, the daughter of Chas. and M. A. (Bixby)
Tyler; and George was a janitor, aged
53, born in Greene, New York, the son of Owen and Catherine
(Squires) Wells. It was noted that
this was the second marriage for both bride and groom and that both were
residents of Greene.
At the time of the 1900
Federal Census, Clara and her youngest daughter, Lillian, were
recorded in the household of Clara’s second husband in Greene, Chenango County, New
York (pg. 75; dwelling #233; family #233; enum.
June 20, 1900). The household was
enumerated as follows:

According to the above
census record, Clara was the mother of four children, all of whom were still
living. George’s occupation was listed
as “day laborer” and the two children were noted as “at school”.
The household of George E. Wells was recorded in the 1910
Federal Census of Greene, Chenango County,
New York (pg. 261; dwelling
#220; family #233; enum. April 27-29 , 1910), as follows:

According to the above
census record, Clara was the mother of four children, all of whom were still

Mrs. Clara (Tyler)
Edgerton Wells died at Greene,
New York on March 3, 1913. Her second husband, George Wells, died
later that year on December 20, 1913.
Clara was presumably buried beside her first husband in the family
plot at Sylvan Lawn
Cemetery in Greene, New York. The gravestone monument there contains an
inscription of her name and birthdate, however the date of her death is
missing.
We are very grateful to Marti Randall of East Weymouth,
Massachusetts, who has supplied much of the
information included here regarding the family of Isaac and Clara (Tyler) Edgerton. Ms. Randall is a descendant of Isaac’s
youngest daughter, Lillian Celestia Edgerton, who married George Merton
Hackett.
