Jared Phineas Edgerton was born May 1847 at West Granby, Connecticut, the only son of Jared Newell Edgerton and his first wife, Lucelia Eliza Griffin.  During his childhood, the family moved back and forth between West Granby, Connecticut and Wisconsin (Milwaukee County and Door County).  In the year 1870, the family was recorded in the Federal Census residing at Fish Creek, Door County, Wisconsin.

Jared Phineas Edgerton was married in Door County, Wisconsin on January 14, 1871 to Julia Ann Burr, daughter of Enos Swazy and Ellen (Amundson) Burr of Sheboygan, Wisconsin.  Julia was born at Sheboygan on July 14, 1854.  Very shortly after their marriage, Jared and Julia returned to his hometown of West Granby, where their eldest child, Ruth Elvira, was born on October 26, 1871.  The births of Jared and Julia’s three eldest children (Ruth Elvira, Newell Jared and Maude Cecil) were each recorded in the Granby Vital Records.  Another son, Ruppert Lee, was recorded in nearby Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut.  No birth records have been located for the other three children.

The household of “Jared Edgarton” was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Collinsville (Canton Township), Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 418; dwelling #340; family #311; enum. June 17, 1880), as follows:

According to the above census record, Julia was the mother of seven children, all of whom were still living.  Jared’s occupation was listed as “carpenter”, Ruppert was listed as a “station agent”, and Enos was noted as “at school”.

Jared Phineas Edgerton died at Hamden, Connecticut on November 12, 1909, and was buried at Centerville Cemetery in Hamden.  Also buried in the family plot there are Jared’s wife, Julia A. Edgerton, and two of his children Alfred Edgerton and Mabel Edgerton Mayer.

Jared PhineasEdgerton left a Last Will and Testament, dated January 10, 1907, which was proved at New Haven, Connecticut on December 14, 1909.  According to the will, Jared left his entire estate in life trust to his wife, Julia, and upon her death or remarriage it was to be, “divided equally between my seven children share and share alike.”   The will was witnessed by George A. Clark, Walter Hayles and Albert W. Hayles.  A copy of the will was recorded with the New Haven Probate District; Volume 399; pp. 405-406.

We are indebted to Mr. James McDonald, of Essex, Connecticut, who has provided much of the above information on the family of Jared Phineas and Julia Ann (Burr) Edgerton.  A short essay entitled “The Edgerton Clan” by Lisle Milton Thorpe (a cousin of this family) gives a brief outline of the family, with biographical synopses of the seven children of Jared and Julia (Burr) Edgerton.
