The Last Will and Testament of John Edgerton II

   In the name of God Amen  I John Edgerton of Norwich in the County of New London in the Colony of Connecticut in New England, considering the mortality of my body and that it [is] appointed unto all once to die being now of sound mind and memory here thought fit this 13th day of May AD 1766 to make and ordain this my last will and testament.  Principally and first of all I give and resign my soul to God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buryed with a decent Christian buryale at the discretion of my executor hereafter named and appointed and as for such worldly estate as God hath blessed me with (after my just debts and funeral charges being paid in manner and form hereafter mentioned) I will and dispose of in the manner following  (viz)

   Imprimis     Whereas I have already given to my beloved son John seventy acres of land by deed of gift yet out of love to him I give and bequeath to him five pounds in lawful money more to be paid him by my executor.

   Item    Whereas I have already given to my beloved son Elisha seventy acres of land by deed of gift to him yet out of love and regard to him I give and bequeath to him his heirs and assigns for ever the priviledge and use of a convenient way to pass and repass from the highway that goes by my house to Samuel Gifford’s dwelling house across my plain to his own land and house: said way to begin at said road at the barn a little southward from my dwelling house where we now enter into the field: then south 34o west twenty two rods: then west 38o south thirty eight rods: then south 25o west eight rods: then west 25o south third four rods: then west 15o north twelve rods: then west 41o south sixteen rods: then west 9o south twenty four rods: then north 5o east thirteen rods: then north 37o south eight rods: then west 5o south nineteen rods: then south west fifteen rods to said Elisha[’s] barn at his own land: the above described way being the way now used and to be two rods wide along way.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Daniel about ninety two acres of land with my dwelling house standing thereon with the other buildings thereon: bounding as follows, Beginning: at west barn south of my house where the road leads to the field crossing the plain to Elisha’s dwelling house: then to bound southerly by the way I have given to my son Elisha the use of as above described till it comes to said Elisha’s land: then bounding by said Elisha’s land till it comes to my said John’s land: then bounded by said John’s land: to land of James Hide: then by said Hide’s land to the heap of stones by a chestnut tree near the sawmill bound of said Hide’s land thence crossing the brook: by land that was John Lothrop’s to the road or highway thence by the highway or road to the first mentioned bound:  I also give and bequeath unto my son Daniel six acres and a half of land with the barn standing thereon on the east side [of] the road opposite the house: Beginning: at a heap of stones on the east side [of] the road about eight rods southerly from the barn mentioned in the priviledge of a way to Elisha thence east to 7o north eighteen rods to a crooked blackook three stones about: thence north 18o east forty two rods to a heap of stones one rod and half east from the northeast corner of the fence: thence by the said road southerly to the first corner , to belong to him his heirs and assigns forever.  I also give to him my said son Daniel all my moveable or personal estate to be his forever: he my said son Daniel paying all my just debts and funeral charges and all the legacies hereafter mentioned out of the same with the five pounds given to my son John before mentioned.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Nathaniel two pieces of land (viz) about two acres and a half of land which was John Lothop’s lying northerly from my house which I purchased of my son Elisha bounded westerly or northwesterly on a brook: northerly on the highway to [----] Hide: eastwardly on the highway that goes by my house: southerly on the land I have given in this will to Daniel: the other piece contains about thirty nine acres beginning: at the barns turning out of the road that goes from my house to Samuel Gifford’s dwelling house at the way that I have given my said son Elisha the priviledge of, thence bounded northerly by the way as the same is described until it comes to said Elisha’s land: thence abutting south southwesterly on said Elisha’s land to the said road that goes to said Gifford’s dwelling house: thence abutting easterly by said road to the first corner which two pieces of land to belong to my son Nathaniel his heirs and assigns forever.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved grandchildren Ruth Jerusha Simeon Zephaniah Elisha Phebe Frederick Reuben and Eliphalet the only children of my beloved daughter Ruth, wife of Peter Huntington deceased fifteen pounds of my personal estate to be equally divided among them to be theirs forever.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Mary fifteen pounds of my personal estate to be hers forever.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Lucy ten pounds of my personal estate to be hers forever.

   Item    I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Phebe twenty pounds of my personal estate to be hers forever.

   Item   I give unto my beloved daughter Eunice twenty shillings lawful money or the value thereof in my personal estate to be hers forever.

   Item   I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Temperance twenty shillings lawful money or the value thereof in my personal estate to be hers forever.

   Item   I give and bequeath unto my beloved daughter Sarah twenty shillings lawful money or the value thereof in my personal estate to be hers forever.

   And my will is that if my personal estate should not be sufficient to pay my said debts and legacies aforementioned then my said son Daniel pay the same in money all the sums mentioned in said legacies to be [----] equal to lawful money.

   And in fine I do hereby appoint my beloved son Daniel my sole executor to this my Last Will and Testament and do hereby solemnly revoke and make null and void all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament.  In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal .
