John Edgerton V was born in Clarendon, Vermont on March 21, 1785, the eldest son of John Edgerton IV and Lydia Reynolds.  During his childhood, his parents removed to Cabot, Washington County, Vermont – in the northeastern section of the state.  John resided in Cabot for the remainder of his life.  He made his living as a farmer.

The family of John Edgerton has not been researched in great detail.  From census and cemetery records, it is known that he had a wife named Olive who was born in Vermont circa 1788.  Beyond this, nothing further is known of Mrs. Olive Edgerton’s parentage or ancestry.

John and Olive had at least two children – a daughter, Sophia, born in Cabot in December 1819; and a son, George W., born in Cabot circa 1825.  Census records (see below) indicate that there may have been other children, but there is currently no record of their identities.

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Cabot, Caledonia County (now Washington County), Vermont (pg. 15), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (John);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son ?);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Olive); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (?).

[For some reason, John and Olive’s infant daughter, Sophia (born in December 1819), was omitted from the enumeration of the family in this census.]

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Cabot, Caledonia County (now Washington County), Vermont (pg. 336), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 40 and under 50”  (John);

1 male “of 5 and under 10”  (son George);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Olive); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (daughter Sophia).

John Edgerton was listed in the “Appraisal of Taxable Lands and Buildings in the Town of Cabot for the year 1837”, which was taken on June 16, 1837 by Leonard Orcutt, Elihu Coburn and Oliver A. Wisner (see Cabot Town Records, Deeds, Volume III).  John was listed with one dwelling house, valued at seventy-five dollars, and three acres of land, appraised at fifteen dollars.

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Cabot, Caledonia County (now Washington County), Vermont (pg. 355), with the following enumeration:

1 male “50 and under 60”  (John);

1 male “15 and under 20”  (son George);

1 male “under 5 years”  (son ?);

1 female “50 and under 60”  (wife Olive); and,

1 female “20 and under 30”  (daughter Sophia).

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Cabot, Washington County, Vermont (pg. 148; dwelling #307; family #313-314; enum. Sept. 21, 1850), as follows:

Given their ages, the two young children listed here – Jerome and Mary – were probably grandchildren (rather than children) of John and Olive Edgerton.  Matilda and Cordella Jackson (listed as a second family in the same dwelling as John Edgerton) may also have been relatives – perhaps a widowed sister and niece.  [Interestingly, John had a younger brother, Andrew, whose middle name was Jackson, indicating perhaps a long-held affiliation between the Jackson and Edgerton families.]

John Edgerton died at Cabot, Vermont in March of 1860.  His death was listed in the Federal Census Mortality Schedule of that year (1860, Washington Co., VT; ID# MRT197 94247), as follows:

John Edgerton was buried at the West Hill Cemetery in Cabot, Vermont.  His gravestone there was inscribed:  “JOHN EDGERTON / DIED ./ March 10, 1860 / AE. 75 yrs”.

The household of Mrs. Olive Edgerton was recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Cabot, Washington County, Vermont (pg. 9; dwelling #2231; family #2364; enum. August 27, 1860), as follows:

Mrs. Olive Edgerton died on November 7, 1866, presumably at Cabot, Vermont.  She was buried beside her husband at West Hill Cemetery, where her gravestone was inscribed:  “OLIVE / Wife of / John Edgerton / DIED / Nov. 7, 1866 / AE 77 yrs.”.  John and Olive’s daughter, Sophia, was also buried with them at West Hill Cemetery.

The descendants of John and Olive Edgerton have not yet been researched in great detail.  The only Edgerton household enumerated in the 1870 Federal Census of Cabot, Washington County, Vermont was that of John and Olive’s widowed daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mahala Mary (Richardson) Edgerton.
