John D. Edgerton served as a Sergeant in the 133rd Indiana Infantry (Company H) during the Civil War.  He enlisted as a private on May 17, 1864, giving his residence as Vigo County, Indiana, and was mustered out at Indianapolis, Indiana on September 5, 1864.

John Dalton Edgerton had presumably died prior to December 30, 1878 when his widow, “Mary L. Edgerton”, was remarried at Vigo County, Indiana to Solomon Monroe.  Mary and her two younger sons, “Gustus Egerton” and “John Egerton” were recorded in Solomon’s household in the 1880 Federal Census enumeration of Sugar Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana (pg. 183; dwelling #57; family #57; enum. June 7, 1880).  The complete household was enumerated as follows:

At the time of the 1910 Federal Census of Mrs. Mary (Thralls) Edgerton Monroe was residing in Terre Haute City (Ward 3), Vigo County, Indiana in the household of her son, John A. Edgerton (pg. 10; no dwelling # or family #; enum. April 25, 1910).  She was enumerated as “Mary L. Monroe, mother, aged 79, widow, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Kentucky.”

 

Mrs. Mary Lucinda (Thralls) Edgerton Monroe died at Terre Haute, Indiana on January 14, 1917.  The following obituary notice was published in the Terre Haute Tribune (pg. 2) on Monday, January 15, 1917:

 

“MRS. MARY THRALLS MONROE.

 

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Thralls Monroe, 86 years old, who died Sunday evening at 6:30 o’clock at her home, 716 South Twentieth street, will be held Tuesday morning at 8:30 o’clock from the residence and at St. Patrick’s church at 9 o’clock.  She is survived by two sons, August and John R. Edgerton; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah A. Carroll of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Harry W. Skean of this city; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.”
