John Oliver Edgerton was born at L’Anse Township, Michigan on February 2, 1864, the eldest son of Guy Earl Edgerton and Mary Louise Crebassa.  John was raised in L’Anse Township and resided for the whole of his life in the upper peninsula of Michigan – in Baraga and Houghton Counties.  He made his living as a farmer.

John O. Edgerton was married at Detroit, Michigan on January 4, 1902 to Matilda Mary O’Donnell, a native of Canada.  According to the marriage record (Wayne Co. VR 4:359:10260), John was aged 27, a resident of Detroit, b. in Michigan, the son of G. E. Edgerton and Mary Crebassa; and Matilda was aged 23, a resident of Saulte Ste. Marie, b. in Canada, the daughter of Jno. O’Donnell and Cath. O’Neill.  The witnesses to the marriage were Patrick O’Donnell of Portage Entry, Michigan (probably John’s brother-in-law) and Elizabeth Edgerton of Detroit (John’s younger sister).  Matilda may have been related to Patrick O’Donnell (~1855 –     ) who had married John’s elder sister, Mary Louise, a few years earlier.

John and Matilda Edgerton resided in Chassell Township, Houghton County, Michigan.  They had four children:  two sons, Earl Chester and Raymond Henry; and two daughters, Eileen Catherine and Ruth Louisa.

The household of John O. Edgerton was recorded in the 1900 Federal Census of Chasell Township, Houghton County, Michigan (pg. 309; dwelling #145; family #158; enum. June 30, 1900), as follows:

According to the above record, Matilda was the mother of three children, all of whom were still living, and had immigrated to the United States in 1880.  John’s occupation was listed as “farmer” and the two sons (Earl and Raymond) were noted as “at school”.  The nephew listed here – Henry O’Donnell – was also recorded earlier in the month in the household of his grandfather Earl Edgerton (aka “Guy Earl Edgerton II”) in Detroit.

John Oliver Edgerton died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hancock, Michigan on April 9, 1903.  His death certificate (#357) reports that he was aged 39 years, 2 months, 7 days and had been born February 2, 1864 in Houghton County, the son of Earl Edgerton (b. New York) and Mary Crebassa (b. L’Anse).  His occupation was listed as “farmer” and the cause of death as appendicitis.

The following obituary notice for John Oliver Edgerton was printed in The Mining Gazette (Houghton County, Michigan) on Saturday, April 11, 1903:

“John Edgerton, aged 39 years, of Portage Entry died Thursday night at St Joseph’s Hospital, Hancock of appendicitis.  He is survived by a wife and four children.  The remains were shipped to L'Anse, Baraga County, Michigan where they will be buried.”

Mrs. Matilda (O’Donnell) Edgerton was remarried on September 25, 1907 at Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan to William W. Mundell, son of William and Jane (Livingston) Mundell (Chippewa Co. VR 1:375:157).  William and Matilda resided in Bruce Township (Chippewa County), where the family was recorded in the 1910 Federal Census (see below).  Matilda had one child with her second husband:  a son, John William, who later took the surname Edgerton.

The household of William Mundell was recorded in the 1910 Federal Census of Bruce Township, Chippewa County, Michigan (pg. 11; dwelling #32; family #32; enum. April 18, 1910), as follows:

Mrs. “Matilda Edgerton Mundell” died at Seattle, Washington on May 19, 1941.  According to the Washington State Death Certificate (#1317), Matilda was aged 71 years and was the daughter of John O’Donnell and Katherine O’Neill.  Matilda was buried May 23, 1941 at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle (8-139-11).   Two of Matilda’s  sons, Capt. Raymond H. Edgerton and John W. Edgerton were later interred at Calvary Cemetery
