John Edgerton was born at West Simsbury, Connecticut, the son of Jonathan and Freedom (Buell) Edgerton.  According to later census records (see below), John was born circa 1764; however, no direct record of his birth has been found.

John Edgerton was married first to Lodama Latimer, daughter of Jonathan and Rachel (Wilcox) Latimer of Simsbury, Connecticut.  Lodama died in Simsbury on August 24, 1792, “aged 26 years”, and was buried at the North Canton Cemetery.  Her headstone there records her as “Lodama, wife of John Edgerton”.  The burial records of the North Canton Cemetery list her death as:  “159 was Lodema the wife of John Edgerton who Died August 23 [sic] 1792” (see “North Canton Cemetery Inscriptions, 1754 – 1855”; The Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin; Vol. 31, No. 2; April 1966; p. 58).  There is currently no documentation of any children born to John and Lodama (Latimer) Edgerton.

John Edgerton was remarried – probably circa 1793 in Simsbury – to Wealthy Graham.  Wealthy’s parentage has not been determined; she may have been related to Zerviah Graham, who later married John’s younger brother, Amos.  According to the age at death listed on her headstone, Wealthy was born circa 1765, probably in Connecticut as reported in the 1880 Federal Census enumeration of her son, Leander.

John and Wealthy (Graham) Edgerton resided first in Simsbury, where census records indicate they had a fairly large family.  To date, six children have been conclusively documented; among these, a daughter, Sevilla; and three sons, Harry, Cicero and Leander.  The records of the North Canton Cemetery also document two additional children:  “an infant of Mr John and Welthen Edgerton Buried June 22 1794” and “a still Born infant of Mr John & Welthen Edgerton July 21 1808” (see “North Canton Cemetery Inscriptions, 1754 – 1855”; The Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin; Vol. 31, No. 2; April 1966; pp. 59, 62).  Edwin Edgerton (~1798 –     ), who resided in China, Genesee County, New York in the 1830’s and 1840’s (later moving west) may have been one of the elder sons of John and Wealthy Edgerton.

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 232), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (John);

2 males “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

4 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons ?);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Wealthy);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Sevilla).

The household of John Edgerton was enumerated again in the 1810 Federal Census of Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut (pg. 689).  At this time, John was residing in the town of Canton (along with his younger brother, Amos) and his household consisted of the following individuals:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (John);

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (?);

2 males “of 10 and under 16”  (sons ?)

4 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Harry, Cicero, Leander and ?);

2 females “of 45 years and upwards”  (wife Wealthy and ?); and,

1 females “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Sevilla).

Circa 1813, John and his younger brother, Amos, removed with their families to Madison County, New York, where their elder brother, Jedediah, had previously settled.  Another brother, Isaac, settled farther north in Florence, Oneida County, New York.  On June 3, 1813, John bought 60 acres in Cazenovia Township (near the present village of Nelson).  John’s wife, Wealthy, and daughter, Sevilla, both died in Nelson in August 1817 – Sevilla on the 5th, “aged 22”; and Wealthy on the 22nd, “aged 52”.  They were both buried in the small cemetery along Thomas Road in Nelson, probably not far from the family farm.

John Edgerton was listed as a head of household in the 1820 Federal Census of Cazenovia, Madison County, New York (pg. 37).  The enumeration of the family was as follows:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (John);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son Leander);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son ?); and,

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (?).

In the 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses, John Edgerton was listed residing in Hamilton, Madison County, New York.  It is uncertain whether he had moved or whether the township lines were changed – such “redistricting” was not uncommon.

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York (pg. 307), with the following enumeration:

1 male “60 and under 70”  (John);

1 male “20 and under 30”  (?);

1 female “50 and under 60”  (? – perhaps a third wife);

1 female “20 and under 30”  (?);

3 females “5 and under 10”  (?); and,

1 female “under 5 years of age”  (?).

The household of John Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York (pg. 214), with the following enumeration:

1 male “70 and under 80”  (John);

1 male “15 and under 20”  (? – possibly a grandson);

1 female “70 and under 80”  (? – perhaps a third wife); and,

1 female “15 and under 20”  (? – possibly a granddaughter).

In the year 1843, John Edgerton, “a resident of Nelson in the said county of Madison [New York], aged Seventy Eight years”, gave testimony that he was present at the wedding of Jedediah Edgerton (his older brother) and Sarah Bunce on September 23, 1779 at Simsbury, Connecticut.  The affidavit, dated December 13, 1843, was taken in the case of Mrs. Sarah (Bunce) Edgerton’s application for a widow’s pension (see Revolutionary War Pension Files, #R3235).

John Edgerton was enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census of Pompey, Onondaga County, New York, residing in the household of his son, Cicero Edgerton (pg. 120; dwelling #1894; family #1935; enum. October 12, 1850).  He was enumerated as “John Edgerton, aged 86, born in New York, blind”.  This is the last known record of John Edgerton.  There is currently no record of his death or burial.

[NOTE:  Francis A. Porter states that John Edgerton may have died in the year 1844, but offers no source documentation (see “Some Descendants of Jonathan Edgerton”, The American Genealogist, January 1968, Vol. 44, no. 1, pgs. 119-125).  In light of the aforementioned 1850 Census record, this information is certainly in error.  It is probable that Mr. Porter was mistaking John Edgerton with another contemporary John “Edgarton” who died in Madison, Madison County, New York on April 8, 1844.  This latter John was descended from Dennis Egerton (aka. Edgarton/Edgerton) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and had settled in Bouckville, Madison County with his wife and family shortly after the turn of the century.]
