The History of the Town
of Northfield
(John Gregory, 1878; pp. 96-97) gives the following biography of Joseph Keyes
Edgerton:
“JOSEPH KEYES EGERTON, Esq., lived in Quechee,
Vt., until the death of his father, when he
moved to Norwich, Vt.,
where he resided fifteen years, then came to Northfield, in March, 1877. He married Sarah F. Tyler, of Claremont, N.H.,
in 1856, and had two children: Edith
K., b 1858; Fred T., b 1862.
Mr. Egerton has had a number of offices conferred upon
him, which he has filled with credit to himself and to his fellow
citizens. He was clerk in J. C.
Brooks’ store, in Hartford, four years, one
year in Cleaveland’s, at Brookfield, and one
year with Camp & Thayer, in Northfield. He was Postmaster at Quechee,
Vt., from 1853 to 1861, then removed to Norwich; was Town Agent, Town Treasurer, and Justice of
the Peace, joined the Odd Fellows in Northfield
in 1852, joined the Masons in 1854, and was Grand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge
of Vermont three years, from 1867 to 1870.
Mr. Egerton is a merchant tailor in our Depot Village,
and understands his business.”
The household of Joseph K. “Egerton” was recorded in
the 1900 Federal Census of Northfield Village, Washington County, Vermont (pg. 206;
dwelling #277; family #334; enum. June 15, 1900), as follows:
