Leander Edgerton was born May 27, 1806 at Simsbury, Connecticut, the son of John Edgerton and his second wife, Wealthy Graham.  During his childhood, Leander’s family removed to Madison County, New York and settled in the town of Cazenovia.  Upon his maturity, Leander settled in Hamilton (also in Madison County).

Leander Edgerton was married twice.  His first wife was named Dorcas Bacon.  Beyond this, very little is know of her family or ancestry.  It is estimated that she was born circa 1810; and in later census records of her children it is consistently reported that she was born in New York State.  There were a number of Bacon families in Hartford County, Connecticut in the area where Leander was born (ie. Simsbury, Canton, Granby).  The census records of the early 1800’s also show a number Bacon households in Hamilton, New York. where Leander settled.  It is probable that Dorcas was related to one of these families.

Leander and Dorcas (Bacon) Edgerton reportedly had six children:  Cyrus, born in 1828, who married Janette ---- and resided in Erieville (Hamilton Township), New York; Wealthy L., born in 1831, who married Dr. Charles M. White and lived in Georgetown, New York; Luman, who married first, Sarah Augusta Daggett, and second, Sarah Jane Ellison; Candace; Jonathan, who died in 1874; and Frank, who was adopted by the Webster family and lived in Pooleville, New York.  The children were presumably born at Hamilton, New York, where census records show the family residing 1830 – 1840.  Some sources list Luman’s birthplace as Pompey, Onondaga County, New York.

Leander Edgerton and his cousin, also named Leander, were both listed as heads of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York – on the same page of the census roll (pg. 307).  Leander’s household was recorded with the following enumeration:

1 male “20 and under 30”  (Leander);

2 males “under 5 years of age”  (son Cyrus and ?); and,

1 female “20 and under 30”  (wife Dorcas).

The household of Leander Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Hamilton, Madison County, New York (pg. 215), with the following enumeration:

1 male “30 and under 40”  (Leander);

1 male “10 and under 15”  (son Cyrus);

1 male “5 and under 10”  (son Luman);

1 male “under 5 years”  (son Jonathan);

1 female “30 and under 40”  (second wife Isabell); and,

2 females “5 and under 10”  (daughters Wealthy and Candace).

At the time of these last two census enumerations, Leander was residing nearby brothers Solomon and Philemon Bacon (sons of Levi and Lucretia Bacon), who were probably relatives of Leander’s first wife, Dorcas.

Most of the information included here regarding the family of Leander Edgerton is provided by Francis A. Porter’s article, “Some Descendants of Jonathan Edgerton”, (The American Genealogist, January 1968, Vol. 44, no. 1, pgs. 119-125).  The following excerpt is given for Leander Edgerton:

“Leander Edgerton, son of John and Wealthy, was born in Connecticut, May 27, 1806.  He married, first, Dorcas Bacon, mother of all but the last child, and she died in Hamilton in 1836; second, Isabell ----.  Leander lived first in Hamilton, then in Pompey, Onondaga County.  In 1841 he settled in the village of Erieville in Madison county, and died there 11 Feb. 1890, aged 83, buried in the Georgetown Cemetery.  He was a blacksmith.”

Mrs. Dorcas Bacon died prior to 1844, by which time Leander had had a child by his second wife, Isabell.  According to the Porter excerpt above, Dorcas died in Hamilton in the year 1836.  No burial location or death record has been located.

The household of “Leonard” Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Nelson, Madison County, New York (pg. 314; dwelling #254; family #254; enum. Aug. 27, 1850), as follows:

Leander Edgerton was separated from his second wife, Isabell, in the early 1850’s.  He then went to live for a time with his elder brother, Cicero Edgerton, in Pompey, New York.  Leander was recorded in Cicero’s household in both the 1855 New York State Census and in the 1860 Federal Census (both in Pompey, Onondaga County, New York).  In the latter 1860’s, Leander was residing in Pitcher, Chenango County, New York, were he was listed in the 1869-70 Business Directory as, “Edgerton, Leander (Pitcher Springs) blacksmith” (see Hamilton Child’s Gazetteer and Business Directory of Chenango County, N.Y.; 1869-70; Syracuse, New York; 1869).

At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, Leander was residing in Nelson, Madison County, New York in the household of John E. Clark (pg. 452; dwelling #278; family #294; enum. August 15, 1870); he was enumerated as, “Leander Edgerton, blacksmith, aged 64, born in Connecticut”.

When the 1880 Federal Census was taken, Leander Edgerton was residing in Georgetown Village, Madison County, New York.  He was living in the household of his daughter and son-in-law, Wealthy and Charles White (pg. 157; dwelling #287; family #312; enum. June 22, 1880), which was enumerated as follows:

Leander’s son, Luman, was residing nearby in Georgetown Village; his household was enumerated on the same page of this census roll (dwelling #281; family #306).

It is not yet known whether Leander’s second marriage ended in divorce or permanent separation.  Leander and Isabelle were not recorded together in any of the censuses after 1860.  At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, Mrs. Isabell Edgerton and her daughter, Isabell, were recorded in Cazenovia (Election District #3), Madison County, New York (pg. 83; dwelling #212; family #235; enum. June 17, 1880).  They were enumerated as follows:
