Leander Edgerton was born January 14, 1844 at Sugar Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana, the youngest son of Cyrus and Roxana (Wilson) Edgerton.  He was raised in Vigo County and resided there the majority of his lifetime, with the exception of a few years in neighboring Clark County, Illinois.  He made his living as a farmer.

Leander Edgerton served in the 115th Indiana Infantry Regiment (Company H) during the Civil War.  He enlisted as a private on August 6, 1863, giving his residence as Putnam County, Indiana.  He served for six months and was mustered out at Indianapolis, Indiana on February 25, 1864.  Leander later applied for a Civil War Invalid Pension on December 9, 1889 as a resident of Indiana.  His widow, “Celia Edgerton”, applied for a Widow’s Pension on March 5, 1918, also a resident of Indiana (see Civil War Pension Files, Application #742221, Certificate #575069; and Application #1116434).

Leander Edgerton was married three times.  His first wife was Eliza Jane Wilkinson, daughter of Reuben and Charity (Goens) Wilkinson of Jackson, Montgomery County, Ohio.  According to the 1860 Federal Census of Wabash, Clark County, Illinois, Eliza was born circa 1846 in Ohio.  Leander and Eliza were married at Clark County, Illinois on July 23, 1865.  A copy of their marriage certificate was filed in the Clark County Marriage Records (Book E, cert. #212).  Leander and Eliza had one child:  a son, Edward Lenhart, born at Clark County, Illinois in April 1866.  Mrs. Eliza (Wilkinson) Edgerton probably died soon after the birth of her only child.  No record of the family was been found in the 1870 Federal Census.

Leander Edgerton was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census of Prairie Creek Township, Vigo County, Indiana (dwelling #186; family #197; enum. June 24, 1880).  He was residing in the household of Walter L. Robinson and was enumerated as “Lee Edgerton, 34, widower, hired, farm laborer, born in Indiana, father born in Connecticut , mother born in New York.”

Leander Edgerton married as his second wife, Amy J. Cotton, who was born December 1845 in Ohio and died at Vermillion County, Indiana on March 31, 1909.  Leander and Amy were married at Vigo County, Indiana on September 5, 1891 (see Vigo County Marriages, Volume 12, cert. #27).

Leander Edgerton was listed as a “teamster” in the 1890 Terre Haute City Directory (Chas. E. Ebel & Co.).  His business adress was listed as “E. M. Gilman” and address as “540 Locust”.  Leander’s son, Edward (“laborer”), was listed at the same address.
