According to the above census record, Sarah was the
mother of seven children, six of whom were still living. Under occupations, Luman and Arthur were
both listed as “blacksmith”, and Charles was listed as “salesman”. Lulu was noted as “at school”. The following obituary
for Mrs. Sarah Jane (Ellison) Edgerton was published in The Syracuse Herald on Sunday, March 30, 1919: “MRS. S. J. EDGERTON DIES IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Sarah Jane Edgerton, 82, widow of Luman Edgerton, and
a lifelong resident of Mrs. Edgerton was born in Madison, Throughout her life, Mrs. Edgerton was active in W.C.T.U. affairs and was one of the first women to cast a ballot at the first option election in this city last [----]. Mrs. Edgerton had at various times lived in the towns of Nelson and Georgetown, Madison county, but during the past few years made her home at No. 765 Madison street, this city. Surviving are four sons, Ernest L., of this city, G. Franklin, of Cleveland, O., Charles W., of Mohawk, and Arthur A. Edgerton, of Frankfurt; one brother, C. W. Ellison, of Manlius. The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the undertaking rooms of W. A. Drinkman. Interment will be at Erieville.” Luman Edgerton and his second wife, Sarah Jane
Ellison, are buried together at Erieville Cemetery in Nelson, New York. Also buried in the family plot are Luman’s
three young children, Celia, Chauncey and Lulu. The gravestone inscriptions there record
