Martin Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut in November of 1773, the fourth son and youngest child of Capt. Elisha and Elizabeth (Lord) Edgerton.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on March 12, 1775.

Martin grew up in Norwich and was married there to Anne Ellis, daughter of William and Anne (Edgerton) Ellis, also of Norwich.  Anne (aka “Anna”) was born in Norwich on April 7, 1783, and was a distant cousin of Martin’s – her mother, Anne, being the eldest daughter of Hezekiah4 (Hezekiah3, Joseph2, Richard1) Edgerton.

The Vital Records of Norwich record the marriage of Martin Edgerton and Anne Ellis on January 6, 1803 (VRp II:623); however, the records of the First Congregational Church of Norwich list a slightly earlier date of December 30, 1802 (ChR 6:132).  Three children were recorded to Martin and Anne (Ellis) Edgerton in the Norwich Vital Records – a daughter, Polly, and two sons, Samuel and Martin Jr. (VRp II:623).

The household of Martin Edgerton was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Norwich City, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 197), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Martin);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (?);

2 males “under 10 years of age”  (sons Samuel and Martin);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Anne);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (?); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Polly).

Martin Edgerton removed from Norwich sometime in the early part of the 19th century.   He last appears as a head of household in Norwich in the 1810 Federal Census.  Between 1815 and 1818, he sold his property in Norwich and shortly afterwards settled in Henrietta, Monroe County, New York in the far western side of the state.  Martin’s father-in law and mother-in-law, William and Anne Ellis, also settled in Henrietta at about this time, as did a number of other in-laws.  Martin Edgerton and his eldest son, Samuel, were both listed as heads of households in the 1830 Federal Census of Henrietta, Monroe County, New York (pages 51 and 45, respectively).

The household of Martin Edgerton was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Henrietta, Monroe County, New York (pg. 51), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Martin);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (son Martin Jr.);

1 male “of 10 and under 15”  (?);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (wife Anne); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 15”  (?).

At the time of this census, Martin was residing adjacent to his father-in-law, William Ellis, whose household was enumerated just before Martin’s on the Henrietta Census Roll.

By 1838, the family had settled in Hartland, Niagara County, New York (just west of Monroe County), where Martin and his two sons, Samuel and Martin Jr., were listed as heads of household in the 1840 Federal Census.  Martin resided in Hartland for the remainder of his life.

The household of Martin Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Hartland, Niagara County, New York (pg. 160), with the following enumeration:

1 male “60 and under 70”  (Martin); and,

1 female “50 and under 60”  (wife Anne).

The household of Martin Edgerton (Sr.) was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Hartland, Niagara County, New York (pg. 312; dwelling #70; family #70; enum. July 27, 1850), as follows:

The household of Martin’s younger son, Martin Edgerton Jr., was recorded on the same page of the census roll.  The elder son, Samuel, had already removed west to Watson Township, Allegan County, Michigan, where he resided until his death in 1868.  Samuel’s neice, Lucy (Edgerton) Miner (daughter of Martin Jr.), later settled in Watson Township where many of her husband, Charles Miner’s family resided.  Many members of this extended family (including Lucy, Samuel and their descendants) are buried at the Miner Cemetery, in Watson Township.

Martin Edgerton died at Hartland, New York on October 5, 1854 and was buried at the Orangeport Union Cemetery in nearby Lockport, New York.  He left a Last Will and Testament, dated February 28, 1854, which was proved at Lockport, New York on November 27, 1854 before Thomas M. Webster, Surrogate.  The will mentioned his “beloved wife Anna”, and all three of his children – that is, “Polly Corbin, my Daughter (deceased)”, “Samuel Edgerton my son”, and “Martin Edgerton Jr. my son”.  Martin Edgerton Jr. and Henry H. Corbin (Martin’s son-in-law) were appointed executors of the will, which was witnessed by James W. Manchester, Needham Maynard and Lorenzo Webster.

In the 1855 New York State Census of Hartland, Niagara County, New York, Martin Edgerton’s widow, Anne, was recorded in the household of her son, Martin Edgerton Jr.  She was enumerated as “Anna Edgerton, aged 73, born in Connecticut, resident of Niagara County for 18 years”.  She was listed again in Martin Jr.’s household in the 1860 Federal Census of Hartland, Niagara County, New York, where she was recorded as “Ann Edgerton, aged 77, born in Connecticut”.

Mrs. Anne (Ellis) Edgerton died on July 19, 1861, presumably at Hartland, New York.  She was buried adjacent to her husband at Orangeport Union Cemetery.
