Nathaniel Edgerton Jr. was born at Salisbury, Connecticut on March 16, 1778, the eldest son of Nathaniel and Eunice (Post) Edgerton.  He was raised in Salisbury and later Canaan (aka. “New Canaan”), Columbia County, New York, where his family had settled in the early-to-mid 1790’s.

Nathaniel was married first, on June 24, 1807 at the Congregational Church and Society of New Canaan, to Charlotte W. Backus, daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Fitch) Backus.  Charlotte was born at Norwich, Connecticut in 1789 and was baptized at the Christ Church there on February 14, 1790.  Charlotte’s father died when she was quite young, and she may have come to Columbia County, New York as early as 1800.  Charlotte had an elder sister, Mrs. Lydia (Backus) Whiting, who lived in New Canaan a number of years, and another sister, Mrs. Betsey (Backus) Converse, who resided in nearby Troy, New York (see The Backus Families of Early New England; Reno W. Backus; 1966; pg. 35).

Census records (see below) indicate that Nathaniel and Charlotte had three children – two sons and one daughter.  The younger son has been identified as Abraham D. Edgerton, who was born at Canaan circa 1814 and was later mentioned in Nathaniel’s will.  The elder son is believed to be Samuel Edgerton of Ashtabula County, Ohio.  According to the family bible in the possession of  his descendants, Samuel was born April 3, 1808 and married Elizabeth Spear on June 3, 1832.  Samuel died shortly following his marriage, leaving one child – a daughter, Charlotte Amelia.

Nathaniel Edgerton was recorded as a head of household in the 1810 Federal Census of Saratoga County, New York (pg. 810), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Nathaniel);

1 male “under 10 years of age” (son Samuel);

1 female “over 45 years of age”  (probably Nathaniel’s widowed mother, Eunice);

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (wife Charlotte);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (? - possibly a servant);

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter ?).

Nathaniel Edgerton was referenced in the records of the Congregational Church and Society of New Canaan, as follows:  “Jan. 24, 1803  Pew No. 4  bid off by Nathaniel Edgerton at $11.00 [per annum]”   Mrs. Charlotte W. Edgerton was admitted to the New Canaan Church on August 6, 1815. (see Records of the Congregational Church and Society of New Canaan at Canaan Four Corners in the town of Canaan, Columbia Co., NY, ed. by Royden Woodward Vosburgh, Oct. 1919).

Mrs. Charlotte (Backus) Edgerton died on December 3, 1818, “aged 29”, and was buried at the “Baldwin-Hamilton” Cemetery in Canaan, New York in the same lot where her father-in-law, Nathaniel Edgerton Sr., and his son, Samuel Edgerton, were also buried (see Old Tombstones and Unusual Cemeteries in Columbia Co., NY; Gerda E. Divine).  Charlotte’s death was also recorded at the New Canaan Church as follows:  “Dec. 2d, 1818  Mrs. Charlotte W. Edgerton of a disorder in t. head, 28.”

Nathaniel Edgerton was remarried on November 15, 1820 at the Congregational Church and Society of New Canaan to Lydia Grodevant.  The parentage of Mrs. Lydia (Grodevant) Edgerton has not been investigated.  According to later census records, she was born in New York State circa 1789.

The household of Nathaniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Canaan, Columbia County, New York (pg. 298), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Nathaniel);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son Samuel);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Abraham); and,

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (second wife Lydia).

Circa 1824, he had removed to Ashtuabula Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio, where he was recorded as a head of household Federal Census of that year (see below).  The records of Congregational Church and Society of New Canaan contain two notable entries regarding Nathaniel’s second wife, Lydia and the family’s removal to Ohio:

“Admitted to the church July 2d, 1820  Lydia Grodevant  Dismissed (Ohio) Oct. 1823” (ChR 28)

“MEMBERS DISMISSED Dec. 14, 1823  Lydia Edgerton…” (ChR 72)

The household of “N. Edgerton” was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio (pg. 131), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 50 and under 60”  (Nathaniel);

1 male “of 20 and under 30”  (son Samuel);

1 male “of 15 and under 20”  (son Abraham);

1 female “of 40 and under 50”  (second wife Lydia); and,

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (?).

In 1835, Nathaniel Edgerton, “of Wood County, Ohio”, purchased two tracts of public land from the U.S. Governement.  The first deed was signed on May 21, 1835 (certificate #10707) and consisted of forty acres of land in the “South West quarter of the North West quarter of Section thirty-four in Township five North or Range ten in the District of Lands subject to sale at Bucyrus Ohio”.  The second deed, signed on the same day (certificate #10708), consisted of a further forty acres located in “South East quarter of the North East quarter of Section thirty-three in Township five north or Range ten in the District of Lands subject to sale at Bucyrus Ohio”.

The household of Nathaniel Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Plain Township, Wood County, Ohio (pg. 429), with the following enumeration:

1 male “60 and under 70”  (Nathaniel);

1 male “20 and under 30”  (son Abraham);

1 female “50 and under 60”  (second wife Lydia); and,

1 female “40 and under 50”  (?).

Nathaniel Edgerton and his son, “A. D. Edgerton” were recorded as voters in the first election held at Plain Township in March of 1835.  Abraham was town clerk in 1842 and also enumerated the school census (taken October 1 – October 20) of the same year.  Nathaniel and Lydia Edgerton were among the founding members of the Plain Congregational Church.

Nathaniel Edgerton “of Plain twp., Wood County, Ohio” left a will dated December 27, 1842.  The will mentioned the following heirs: wife, Lydia; son, Abraham D; and wife’s daughter, Susan G.  The witnesses to the will were Benjamin Woodbury, John Evers, and Ezekiel McFerrin (see Wood County Will Abstracts, 1820 – 1850).

To date, research on the children of Nathaniel Edgerton Jr. has been very limited.  The younger son, Abraham D., was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Plain Township, residing in the household of Philip and Nancy Condit.  According to the census enumeration (Plain Twp., Wood County, Ohio; pg. 309; dwelling #669; family #691; enum. September 6, 1850), Abraham was “aged 36, born in New York”.  Abraham was enumerated in subsequent censuses of Wood County, Ohio; he died at Tonlogery, Ohio in 1880.

The household of Mrs. Lydia (Grodevant) Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of LeRoy, Calhoun County, Michigan (pg. 106; dwelling #771; family #791; enum. September 17, 1850), as follows:
