Oliver Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on November 16, 1765, the son of Asa Edgerton and his first wife, Hannah Griswold.  Oliver was the second child in the family to bear the name – he had an elder brother, also named Oliver, who died in 1760 at the age of just two months.  Oliver’s mother died when Oliver was less than two months old.  He was raised by his stepmother, Eunice (Storrs) Edgerton, who married his father in 1767.

Oliver was raised mainly in Norwich, Connecticut.  In 1781, he removed along with the rest of his family to Randolph, in Orange County, Vermont.  He was married there on December 7, 1788 to Miss Lucy Brainerd, daughter of Elijah and Lucy (Smith) Brainerd, formerly of Haddam, Connecticut.  Lucy was born at Haddam on February 1, 1761.

Oliver and Lucy resided in East Randolph, where they raised a family of eight children – three sons, Timothy Brainerd, Sylvester and Oliver; and five daughters, Permelia, Lydia, Lucy, Philura Hough and Sally.  The entire family was recorded together in the Vital Records of Randolph (Book A, pg. 16).

The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in the 1790 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 76), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 16 years and upwards”  (Oliver);

1 male “under 16 years”  (son Timothy); and,

1 female  (wife Lucy).

The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 553), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 26 and under 45”  (Oliver);

1 male “of 10 and under 16”  (son Timothy);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Sylvester);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (wife Lucy);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Permelia - actually aged 9); and,

1 female “under 10 years of age”  (daughter Lydia).

The household of “Oliver Egerton” was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 389), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upwards”  (Oliver);

1 male “of 16 and under 26”  (son Timothy or Sylvester);

1 male “under 10 years of age”  (son Oliver Jr.);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards”  (wife Lucy);

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Lydia); and,

3 females “under 10 years of age”  (daughters Lucy, Philura and Sally).

Oliver Edgerton died on August 22, 1814, presumably at Randolph, Vermont, although no record of his death is found there.  He was buried at the Randolph Center Cemetery, where his gravestone was inscribed:  “OLIVER / son of / Asa Edgerton Esqr.  & / Hannah, his wife / died August 22 / AD 1814 / aged 49 years”.

Oliver Edgerton died not leave a will.  His estate was declared insolvent and James Tarbox and Richard Kimball were appointed by the Probate Court to administer the estate of “Oliver Egerton, late of Randolph”.  They duly placed an advertisement in the Vermont Republican announcing their intention to settle with the creditors of the estate on two Mondays in October and February of the coming year.

Mrs. Lucy (Brainerd) Edgerton survived her husband thirty years.  She was recorded as a head of household in the 1820 and 1830 Federal Censuses of Randolph, Vermont.

The household of Mrs. Lucy Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 220), with the following enumeration:

2 males “of 26 and under 45”  (sons Timothy and Sylvester);

1 female “of 45 years and upwards” (Lucy);

2 females “of 16 and under 26”  (daughters Lucy and Philura); and,

1 female “of 10 and under 16”  (daughter Sally).

[Note:  The youngest son, Oliver Jr. (then aged 19), was not included with the family in this enumeration.  He may have been residing with his uncle, Lebbeus Edgerton, whose household was recorded with a number of unnaccounted individuals – including one male “of 16 and under 26”.]

The household of “Mrs. Lucy Edgerton” was recorded in the 1830 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 189), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 30 and under 40”  (son Sylvester);

1 female “of 70 and under 80”  (Lucy); and,

1 female “of 20 and under 30”  (daughter Sally).

Mrs. Lucy (Brainerd) Edgerton died on March 5, 1844 – presumably at Randolph, Vermont.  She was buried beside her husband at the Randolph Center Cemetery, where her gravestone was inscribed:  “LUCY, wife of / OLIVER EDGERTON / DIED / March 5, 1844 / AE 83 y & 1 mo”.

The Genealogy of the Brainerd Family (David Dudley Field; New York, New York: John F. Trow, Printer;1857; pp. 199-200), gives the following account of the family of Oliver and Lucy (Brainerd) Edgerton:

“Lucy Brainerd was married to Oliver Edgerton, of Randolph, Vermont, a prosperous farmer and an excellent man. They had eight children.  The mother died in 1844.  The time of the father's death I do not know; nor am I informed as to the family of Brainerd Edgerton, the oldest son.  Permelia Edgerton was married to Charles Adams, January 28, 1810.  She died in 1851.  Sylvester lives in Randolph.  Is a farmer, and unmarried.  Lydia was married to Studson Caswell.  Oliver is a trader in Troy, New York.  He married Hannah Converse.  Philura was married to a Mr. Haze. They live in Hanover, N. H.  Philury was married to Jeremiah Chandler. They live also in Hanover.  Sarah lives in Randolph, and is unmarried.”
