Oliver Edgerton Jr. was born at Randolph, Vermont
on September 7, 1800, the son of Oliver and Lucy (Brainerd) Edgerton. He was raised in Randolph, and was married
there on March 2, 1834 to Hannah Converse, daughter of Israel and Anna
(Smith) Converse, also of Randolph. Oliver and Hannah (Converse) Edgerton had seven
children: five sons, George Stearns,
Henry Clay, William Converse, James Oliver and Charles Edward; and two
daughters, Anna Louisa and Emma Frances.
The family resided initially in Randolph, but then removed to Troy,
New York, where they resided for about twenty-five years. Oliver later settled in Brooklyn, New York,
where he lived until his death. Oliver and Hannah were members of the Second
Street Presbyterian Church at Troy, New York.
Their four younger sons were baptized together at the Church on April
28, 1850. The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in
the 1840 Federal Census
of Troy (Ward
1), Rensselaer County, New York (pg. 6), with the following enumeration: 1 male “of 30 and under 40” (Oliver); 1 male “of 10 and under 15” (son George); 1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Hannah); 1 female “of 15 and under 20” (?); and, 2 females “under 5 years of age” (daughters Anna and Emma) The household of Oliver Edgerton was recorded in

Oliver
Edgerton died at Brooklyn, New York on December 23, 1868. He was buried on December 27, 1868 at
Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. His
wife, Hannah, and several descendants were later interred in the family plot
(section 61, lot 13544). The following
obituary notice for Oliver Edgerton was
published in The New York Times on
Friday, December 25, 1868: “EGERTON. – In Brooklyn, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, OLIVER EGERTON, in the 69th year of his age.” The household of Mrs. Hannah (Converse) Edgerton was

At the time of this enumeration, the family was residing at 248 Union Street. The following obituary
notice for Mrs. Hannah (Converse) Edgerton was published in The New York Herald on Saturday, May
13, 1882: “EGERTON. – On May 11, HANNAH CONVERSE, widow of the late Oliver Egerton, aged 75 years. Funeral services at her late residence, 248 Union st., Brooklyn, Saturday, at five P.M. Relatives and friends are invited. Troy papers please copy.” Original Source Documents: 1840
