Oliver Newberry Edgerton was born at Sangerfield, New York on January 20, 1822, the only son of Isaac Huntington Edgerton and Louisa Newberry. He was named for his maternal uncle, Oliver Newberry. Oliver was raised in Sangerfield. Following the death of his father in 1842, Oliver removed to Detroit, Michigan with his mother and sisters to live with their uncles, Oliver and Henry Newberry. Oliver was enumerated there in the 1850 Federal Census of Detroit (Ward 1), Wayne County, Michigan (pg. 12; dwelling #114; family #131; enum. July 19, 1850), as “Oliver N. Edgerton, clerk, aged 36, b. New York”. Oliver N. Edgerton was married on January 2, 1851 at Vermilion, Erie County, Ohio to Lovisa Alger Goodsell, daughter of Benjamin S. and Laura (Alger) Goodsell of Vermilion, Ohio, formerly of Columbia County, New York. A notice of the marriage was published in the Sandusky Democratic Mirror on January 14, 1851. According to the 1900 Federal Census enumerations (see below), Lovisa was born August 1829 in New York State and both of her parents were also born in New York. The specific age at death reported on her death certificate (see below) indicates a birthdate of August 20, 1829. The death certificate also gives Lovisa’s birthplace as “Hillsdale, N.Y.” Oliver and Lovisa (Goodsell) Edgerton had two children: a son Franklin, who died in infancy, and a daughter, Ruth May, born at Detroit, Michigan in May 1860. Lovisa obtained a divorce from Oliver circa 1865 and was subsequently remarried to John White Barnum (1814 – 1883) of Waverly, Iowa. Oliver Edgerton and his family were recorded in the 1860 Federal Census of Detroit (Ward 1), Wayne County, Michigan, residing in the boarding house of George Davis (dwelling #517; family #561; enum. June 22, 1860). They were enumerated as follows:

Oliver’s wife, Lovisa, had remarried by this time. She and her daughter, Ruth, were recorded in the 1870 Federal Census of Waverly (Washington Township), Bremen County, Iowa in the household of Lovisa’s second husband, John W. Barnum (pg. 338; dwelling #26; family #26; enum. July 22, 1870). The family was enumerated as follows:

At the time of this census,
the family was residing at Oliver Newberry Edgerton died at Detroit, Michigan on February 25, 1885. According to the record of his death (Wayne Co., MI Vital Records, Deaths, pg. 357, no. 3289), he was aged 65 years, married and was born in New York State. Oliver was buried in the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. The inscription on family monument which was later erected there records the dates of his birth and death. At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, Oliver’s wife, Lovisa, and her daughter, Ruth, were recorded in the household of Lovisa’s second husband, John W. Barnum, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois (pg. 239; dwelling #38; family #42; enum. June 2, 1880). Lovisa was enumerated there as “Louvisa Barnum, wife, aged 50, b. in New York, both parents b. in New York”. John Barnum died at Chicago in 1883 and Lovisa was remarried on December 3, 1896 at Owosso, Shiawassee County, Michigan to Jas. J. Stever. According to the marriage record (Shiawassee Co. Vital Records, Marriages, pg. 185, no. 2852), Lovisa was aged 58, a resident of Chicago, born in Ohio, the daughter of Benj. Goodsell. The witnesses to the marriage were Lovisa’s daughter, Ruth M. Gardner, and her son-in-law, James P. Gardner. By the time of the 1900 Federal Census, Lovisa was widowed again and was residing in Hyde Park, Cook County, Illinois in the household of her son-in-law, James P. Gardner (pg. 311-312; dwelling #148; family #242; enum. June 13, 1900). She was enumerated as “Lovisa A. Stever, mother-in-law, aged 70, b. August 1829 in New York State, both parents born in New York State”. The enumeration also reports that Lovisa was the mother of two children, one of whom was still living. Mrs. Lovisa Alger (Goodsell) Edgerton Barnum Stever died at her daughter’s home in Hyde Park, Illinois on April 12, 1909. According to the Cook County death certificate (#9319), she had died at “4803 Greenwood Avenue”, aged 79 years, 7 months, 13 days and both of her parents were born in “New York State”. Her birthplace was reported as Hillsdale, New York and the burial location as “Hinsdale, Ill” at 1pm on April 14th. The cause of death was given as cerebral hemorrhage.
