Robert Edgerton III was born in Wallingford, Vermont on March 19, 1828, the second son of Robert and Abigail (Bowen) Edgerton.  Robert was raised in North Dorset (Bennington County), Vermont, where his father had settled shortly after his birth.  He was a dairy farmer and also raised cattle and stock.

Robert Edgerton was married in 1851 to Anna Mary Irish, the younger sister of his brother, Hiram’s wife, Mary Ann.  Anna was born in Hinesburg (or possibly Shelburne), Vermont on July 11, 1829, the daughter of Benjamin and Phebe (Baldridge) Irish.  Robert and Anna resided briefly in Shelburne, Vermont but returned to North Dorset within a few years after their marriage.  The family resided for a few years in North Dorset, and then settled in neighboring Danby circa 1860.

Robert and Anna Edgerton had a total of eight children – three sons and five daughters.  Three of their daughters – Phoebe, Sarah and Nancy – died in the Spring of 1865 during the great Scarlet Fever outbreak in the Danby/Dorset area.
