Children:
Simon Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on December 14, 1753, the eldest son and first child of Capt. Elisha and Elizabeth (Lord) Edgerton. He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on July 7, 1754. Simon was a farmer and lived in Norwich all his life. His father, Elisha, died in 1782, and according to the distribution of the estate (in 1795), Simon inherited the home farm and, as eldest son, a double share in his father’s lands. At the same time, he bought out the shares of his two married sister, Polly and Lucy. Simon was recorded as a head of household when then 1790 Federal Census of New London County, Connecticut (pg. 177) was taken. His household consisted of: 2 males “of 16 years and upward” (Simon and younger brother Gurdon) 1 male “under 16 years of age” (youngest brother Martin); and, 2 females (mother Elizabeth and ?). Simon Edgerton was married on February 7, 1792 at the First Congregational Church of Norwich, to Lucy Griswold, daughter of Abel and Ruth (Avery) Griswold. Lucy was born in Norwich on February 26, 1765. Simon and Lucy had a family of five sons – Daniel Griswold, William, Francis Griswold, Elisha and Charles. The family was fully recorded in the Vital Records of Norwich (VRp II:638). Simon and Lucy were members of the First Congregational Church of Norwich. They probably joined with the Church shortly before November 27, 1809, as their five sons were baptized together on that date (ChR 2:200a). “Lucy, wife of Simon Edgerton” was admitted to the Norwich First Church in 1809 (ChR 4:218). The household of Simon Edgerton was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 552), with the following enumeration: 1 male “over 45 years of age” (Simon); 1 male “of 16 and under 26” (probably younger brother Martin); 3 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Daniel, William and Francis); and, 1 female “of 26 and under 45” (wife Lucy). The household of Simon Edgerton was recorded again in the 1810 Federal Census of Norwich, New London County, Connecticut (pg. 216), with the following enumeration: 2 males “over 45 years of age” (Simon and ?); 1 male “of 16 and under 26” (son Daniel); 2 males “of 10 and under 16” (sons William and Francis); 2 males “under 10 years of age” (sons Elisha and Charles); and, 1 female “over 45 years of age” (wife Lucy). Simon Edgerton died at Norwich, Connecticut on February 3, 1820. His death was recorded at the First Congregational Church of Norwich as: “Simon Edgerton, aged 66” (ChR 8:80). A smiliar obituary notice was published in The Connecticut Courant (Hartford, Connecticut) on February 29, 1820. Simon was buried at the Old Norwich Town Cemetery, where his parents and grandparents were also buried. His headstone there was inscribed: In memory of Mr. Simon Edgerton who died Febr 3d 1820, aged
66 years. Simon Edgerton died without leaving a will. Two of his sons, Daniel and Francis, were appointed to administer the estate. A return filed with the Probate Court on June 20, 1821 detailed their sale of Simon’s lands to various neighbors in Norwich. Following Simon’s death, his eldest son, Daniel Griswold Edgerton, took over the family homestead in Norwich. Daniel was recorded as the head of household when the 1820 Federal Census was taken (Norwich Town, New London County, Connecticut; pg. 647). Mrs. Lucy (Griswold) Edgerton died at Norwich, Connecticut on December 15, 1823. Her death was recorded at the First Congregational Church of Norwich as: “Widow Edgerton, died December 15, 1823, aged 59 years” (ChR 8:83). Lucy was buried beside her husband at the Old Norwich Town Cemetery; her headstone there was inscribed: In memory of Mrs Lucy relict of Mr. Simon Edgerton who died Dec 15, 1823, aged
