Stephen Edgerton was born May 15, 1760 in Norwich, Connecticut, the son of John Edgerton III and Elizabeth Prentice.  He was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on May 18, 1760.

Stephen was raised in Norwich, and enlisted as a private in the Connecticut militia for service in the American Revolution.  In 1777, he served in Capt. Benjah Leffingwell’s company; and according to DAR files, he reenlisted following his discharge for further service in the “Three month’s men”.  Stephen Edgerton was listed as a private from Connecticut in the DAR Patriot Index, which also records the dates of his birth and death.

Stephen Edgerton was married (probably circa 1785) to Temperance Bailey of Groton, Connecticut.  Temperance was the daughter of Obadiah and Azuba (Rogers) Bailey and was born in Groton on February 17, 1756.  Stephen and Temperance resided for the first years of their married life in Norwich, Connecticut.  The family may also have resided briefly in Bennington, Vermont, where one record states that the eldest son, Isaac, was born in 1788.  If so, the family had returned to Norwich by 1790, where Stephen was recorded as a head of household in the first Federal Census of that year (see below).

Seven children are currently documented for Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton:  Elizabeth P., who married Joseph A. Cook; Isaac Huntington, who married Louisa Newberry; Guy Earl, who married Esther Cooley King; Vine Bailey, who married Lucinda ---; Eunice M., who married Dexter Drury; Ezekiel H., who married Maria Parker; and Stephen P., who married Anne Cox.  There may have been other children (as suggested by the census enumerations of the family), but there is currently no evidence of their identities.

The household of Stephen Edgerton was enumerated in the 1790 Federal Census of New London County, Connecticut (pg. 177) as follows:

1 male “of 16 years and upwards”  (Stephen);

1 male “under 16 years of age”  (son Isaac); and,

3 females (wife Temperance, daughter Elizabeth, and ?).

The third female listed in this census was probably Stephen’s widowed mother, Elizabeth, who according to Norwich land records was still living at this time.

Shortly before the turn of the centruy, Stephen Edgerton removed with his family to Sangerfield, in Oneida County, New York.  Curiously, there appears to be no record of Stephen’s family in either the 1800 or 1810 Federal Censuses.

The household of Stephen Edgerton was recorded in the 1820 Federal Census of Sangerfield, Oneida County, New York (pg. 305), with the following enumeration:

1 male “of 45 years and upward”  (Stephen);

2 males “of 26 and under 45”  (sons Guy and ?);

3 males “of 16 and under 26”  (sons Vine, Ezekiel and Stephen);

1 female “over 45 years of age”  (wife Temperance);

1 female “of 26 and under 45”  (daughter ?); and,

1 female “of 16 and under 26”  (daughter Eunice).

Stephen’s eldest son, Isaac H., was already out on his own by this time.  He was also listed as a head of household on the same page of the Sangerfield Census Roll, as was Stephen’s brother-in-law, Vine Bailey.  It appears from the listing on the census roll that the three families were residing adjacent to each other.

Stephen Edgerton died at Sangerfield, New York on December 11, 1823, aged 63 years.  He was buried at the Old Sangerfield Cemetery.  One of Stephen’s sons, Guy Earl, along with his wife, Esther, and two of their children, were also buried at the Old Sangerfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton survived her husband a number of years.  At the time of 1830 Federal Census, she was probably residing in Sangerfield with her unmarried son, Vine Bailey Edgerton, whose household was enumerated with a female aged 70 – 80.

Temperance later removed from Sangerfield, along with many of her sons, and settled with them in Bridgeport (Sullivan Township), Madison County, New York – just to the southwest of Oneida County.   She died there on June 5, 1842, and was buried at the Old Bridgeport Cemetery, where her gravestone inscriptions reads:  “Temperance Edgerton, wife of Stephen Edgerton, died June 5, 1842, aged 85 yrs, 3 mos and 18 days”.  Two of her sons, Isaac and Ezekiel, and a granddaughter, Cynthia Maria (daughter of her son Vine B.), were buried nearby at the same cemetery.
