Stephen P. Edgerton was born
in July 1801 at Sangerfield, New York, the
youngest son of Stephen and Temperance (Bailey) Edgerton. His full name was probably Stephen Prentice
Edgerton, after his great-grandfather, Stephen Prentice. To date, no primary record of Stephen’s
birthdate has been found. The partial
birthdate listed here is derived from the age at death recorded on his
gravestone at the Oneida Valley Cemetery (see below).
Stephen was married in 1824
to Anne Cox (aka. Coxe, Cock), daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth (Pearce) Cox
of Chappaqua, Westchester County,
New York. Anne was born in Chappaqua on April 9,
1806. The Cox family were Quakers and
had come from Westchester County to Reading,
Schuyler County, New York circa 1821, and from there to nearby Rock Stream,
in Yates County. Stephen and Anne settled initially in the
town of Milo, Yates County, New York,
not far from where her parents had settled in Rock Stream. They had four children – three sons, Emmet,
Vine Edgar and George, and one daughter, Mary E.
Stephen P. Edgerton was
listed as a head of household in the 1830 Federal Census
of Milo, Yates County, New York (pg. 226). The enumeration of the household was as
follows:
1 male “of 20 and under 30” (Stephen);
1 male “under 5 years of age” (son Emmet); and,
1 female “of 20 and under 30” (wife Anne).
By the late 1830’s, Stephen
and Anne had removed to Lenox, Madison County, New York where Stephen’s elder
brother, Ezekiel H. Edgerton also resided for a brief time.
Stephen P. Edgerton died at
Lenox, New York on January 31, 1839.
He was buried at the Oneida
Valley Cemetery
in Lenox, where his gravestone was
inscribed with the following epitaph:
STEPHEN P.
EDGERTON
died Jan.
31, 1839
aged 37 yr’s
& 6 Mo’s

Stephen’s death is also
referenced in Names and Sketches of the Pioneer Settlers of Madison
County, New York (William H. Tuttle, Interlaken, New York, 1984; pg.
83). Stephen’s elder sister, Elizabeth
P. (Edgerton) Cook and several members of her family are also buried at the Oneida Valley Cemetery.
The household of Mrs. “Ann
Egerton” was recorded in the 1840 Federal
Census of Verona, Oneida
County, New York
(pg. 438), with the following enumeration:
1 female “of 30 & under 40” (Anne);
1 female “of 15 & under 20” (?);
1 female “of “10 & under 15” (daughter Mary, actually aged 7”); and,
2 males “under 5”
(sons Vine and George).
Circa 1844, Mrs. Anne
Edgerton left Oneida
County and settled in
Dix, Schuyler County, New York, just south of Rock Stream, where her parents
resided. At the time of the 1850 Federal
Census, Anne and her two elder children (Emmet and Mary) were recorded in
the household of her brother-in-law, William Haring, in Dix, Chemung (now
Schuyler) County, New York
(pg. 53; dwelling #831; family #843, enum. August 27, 1850). There were enumerated as follows:

At the time of this
enumeration, Stephen and Anne’s second son, Vine Edgar, was living in
Sullivan (Madison County), New
York with his uncle, Vine Bailey Edgerton. The whereabouts of the youngest son,
George, is not known.
The household of Mrs. Anne
(Cox) Edgerton was recorded in more detail in the 1855 New York State Census
of Dix, Schuyler County, New York (dwelling #56; family #58; enum. June 11,
1855). At this time, the family was
living on their own in a frame house valued at $600.00. The household was enumerated as follows:

At the time of the 1860 Federal
Census, Mrs. Anne (Cox) Edgerton was recorded in the household of her
son-in-law, Eugene O. Allen, in Paris, Oneida County, New
York (dwelling #129; family #127-8; enum. June 21,
1860). She was enumerated as “Anne
Edgerton, aged 52, b. in New York”.
At the time of the 1870
Federal Census, Mrs. Anne (Cox) Edgerton was recorded in the household of her
brother-in-law, William Haring in Watkins (Dix Township), Schuyler County,
New York (dwelling #452; familly #498; enum. July 21, 1870). She was enumerated as “Mrs. Ann Edgerton,
aged 64, b. in New York”.
Mrs. Anne (Cox) Edgerton
died on August 3, 1882 (presumably at Rock
Stream, New York or
nearby), aged “76 years, 3 months and 26 days”. She was buried at the Rock Stream
Cemetery, adjacent to
the plot where her parents, Jesse and Elizabeth, were buried.
The following obituary
for Mrs. Anne (Cox) Edgerton was published in the Yates County Chronicle
on Thursday, August 10, 1882:
“Mrs. Anna Edgerton died on Thursday night having been in
a comatose state for over two weeks.
Her maiden name was Coxe, a descendant from the same root with the
Right Rev. Bishop Coxe. Her grandfather
was long a leading merchant in New
York. In the
latter part of the last century she married S. Edgerton in 1824, who died in
1839, leaving her with a family of five small children; one by one they have
passed away early in their matured years, leaving but one son, Edmund
Edgerton, to follow her to the grave.
She was buried on Sunday last from the M. E. church in Rock Stream
cemetery among her father’s kindred, aged 76 years.”
The children of Stephen and
Anne (Cox) have not been previously researched in great detail. The eldest son, Emmet (aka. Edmund) was
married to Clara Cooper and resided for a time in Ripon,
Wisconsin, later removing to New York City;
his daughter, Winifred Haring Edgerton (1862 – 1951), was the first American
woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics.
The only daughter, Mary, was married to Eugene O. Allen and resided
for a time in Paris, New York; she died in
1860. The second son, Vine Edgar,
removed to Atchison, Kansas, where he was married to Diantha
Shaw and had two daughters; he was killed while fighting in the Union Army
during the Civil War. The youngest
son, George, moved west with his elder brother, Vine; he was enumerated in
the 1859 Territorial Census of Doniphan County, Kansas, after which there is
no further record of him.
