Susannah Edgerton was born at Norwich, Connecticut on August 16, 1739, the daughter of Richard Edgerton III and his first wife, Hannah Calkins.  She was baptized at the First Congregational Church of Norwich on August 19, 1739.  Susannah was raised in Lebanon, Connecticut, where her parents settled in the early 1740’s.

Susannah Edgerton was married to Aaron Cogswell, son of Hezekiah and Susannah (Bailey) Cogswell, of Lebanon, Connecticut.  Shortly after their marriage, Aaron and Susannah removed from Connecticut and settled in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, along with many other members of Aaron’s family.  Susannah died in Cornwallis prior to February 19, 1778, when Aaron was remarried there to Ruth Parish.

The parentage of Mrs. Susannah (Edgerton) Cogswell was previously unknown; however recent research conducted by Ms. Sheila Burke See has produced documentation that she was indeed the daughter of Richard and Hannah (Calkins) Edgerton.  Susannah was recently approved as a Mayflower descendant by the Mayflower Society – through her mother, Hannah (Calkins) Edgerton, who was a third great-granddaughter of Elder William Brewster.  Our thanks are also extended to Roger Bohn of Batavia, New York, who has provided information on the family of Aaron and Susanna (Edgerton) Cogswell.  Mr. Bohn is currently researching the descendants of Susannah and Aaron and has documented over 600 descendants of this couple.
