Sylvester Edgerton was born in Randolph, Vermont on October 2, 1792, the second son and third child of Oliver and Lucy (Brainerd) Edgerton.  Sylvester was raised in Randolph, and resided there his entire life.  He made his living as a farmer and laborer.  He was never married.

 

On April 17, 1813, “Sylvester Egerton” enlisted at Randolph, Vermont for a term of one year military service in the United States Army.  He served as a private in 31st U. S. Infantry under Capt. Silas Dickinson.  According to the enlistment record, Sylvester was “sick in Randolph” from December 31, 1813 until February 28, 1814. 

 

The household of Sylvester Edgerton was recorded in the 1840 Federal Census of Randolph, Orange County, Vermont (pg. 112), with the following enumeration:

 

1 male “40 and under 50”  (Sylvester);

1 female “70 and under 80”  (mother Lucy); and,

1 female “30 and under 40”  (sister Sally).

Sylvester Edgerton died at Randolph, Vermont on September 25, 1866.  According to the record of his death (Randolph VR C:149:43), he was aged 73 years, 11 months and 23 days, and had been born in Randolph, the son of Oliver and Lucy [Edgerton].  The cause of death was listed as “Erysipelas”.  Sylvester was buried next to his parents at the Randolph Center Cemetery, where his gravestone was inscribed:  “SYLVESTER EDGERTON / BORN / in Randolph VT. / October 2, 1792 / DIED / September 25, 1866”.
