Thomas H. Edgerton was born at Franklin, New York on June 26, 1819, the son of Erastus and Sophronia (Willis) Edgerton.  Thomas was raised in Franklin, New York.  He made his living as a farmer and laborer.  In 1837, upon the death of his father, Erastus, he inherited half of his father’s lands in Franklin.

As a young man, Thomas removed from New York to Milanville (Damascus Township), in Wayne County, Pennsylvania.  He was married in 1841 to Lois Jernetta Pixley of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, with whom he had a family of three children – a son, Erastus Douglas; and two daughters, Nellie E. and Mary Augusta.  There may have been another child who died young, as indicated by the 1900 Federal Census (see below).  The family resided variously in Milanville, Pennsylvania and Cochecton, New York.  (Cochecton was located in Sullivan County, New York, just west across the Pennsylvania/New York border.)

The household of Thomas Edgerton was recorded in the 1850 Federal Census of Damascus Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania (dwelling #122; family #122; enum. August 23, 1850), as follows:

Thomas H. Edgerton died on April 3, 1887, reportedly at Oradell, Bergen County, New Jersey.  His body was returned to his hometown and buried in the family plot at Ouleout Valley Cemetery, in Franklin village.  Thomas’ wife, Lois, and all three of his children were later buried in the same plot.  The large Edgerton monument there contains the following inscriptions for Thomas’ family:
